Input Monitoring ? (Sonar 7 Producer)

I started a new project, which I have not done in over a year.  I started with one audio track and one midi track.

I can hear my guitar in the audio track through my speakers................ UNTIL I start the project to play along with the midi track.  I don't think it's a hardware problem because other projects work fine.

For this project whenever I press the "play" button the input monitoring (for the audio channel) is muted.  Before I press play I can hear the guitar fine.  The "Audio Engine" (green button) is lit, and the Echo button for the channel is also lit when I start)

What parameters should I check?

You have not stated what soft synth you have inserted to trigger playback of your midi track.
You will need to insert a synth of some kind to play back the midi data, which is not music, it;s just data.
Try inserting the TTS1 first then drag and drop your midi file into that.

The midi track is working fine.  I'm triggering a Roland (hardware synth module).

It's the Audio track that is "muted" after I start playing the project.  I can hear the drum/midi track fine.

away from my pc right now so tryng to visualize the screen. I run 7 studio but figured this oput yesterday. Sorry to be a bit vague but you want the drop down that handles audio/midi devices etc.

In options-general there should be a box that says something like 'disable input echo/monitoring during playback'. I've a feeling this box is checked (ticked). Clear the box and you will hear your input constantly.

I only found this yesterday and itmnight only apply to Sonar 7 (producer/studio) upgrade  version 2 which you can download from cakewalk

You have to turn on Input Monitoring on the guitar track.

How do you turn on Input Monitoring?  I tried the echo button, but for some reason that did not work

Did you check to make sure the output of the track is set to master? What shows in audio options as your output, your interface or your on board sound card. The master buss will also show where the sound is going. You don't mention if the midi is playing a soft synth so I assume your using ms wavetable which outputs from the on board card. Input echo is to the right of the rec. in track view. looks like a sound wave. It is light when toggled on.

Output is set to master.  When I click the play button the green audio engine light goes out and the sound from the audio card is muted.

Dang, couldn't get edit to open? Are you using an on board sound card? Normally to record we use an audio interface and monitor( guitar/vocals) at the input using the headphone jack built into the interface. This is called direct monitoring. Otherwise you will have to monitor after the sound has traveled through and out the other end. Only better quality interfaces have low enough round trip latency to eliminate a delay in your signal. On board sound cards do not fall into the better category by any stretch.I keep input echo off unless it's MIDI.Otherwise I hear the guitar 12ms or more seconds later.I've never had to resort to an on board sound card but I think it will not allow input echo. They say asio4all is a fix to on board issues.

    I'm using a Delta 44 PCI card
My old tracks work fine...........it's not a hardware issue.  There has to be a setting somewhere that I can't find

I can't think of a toggle that would "turn off audio engine while recording" You say you can playback other projects, have you tried arming a track in one of those?

Well I just tried this and the audio engine light does go out when I hit record and go.I have sonar on my laptop and I don't have my interface hooked in right now. So you problem is still one of monitoring set up. Aren't those delta cards the ones that don't have a headphone jack?

Ok I just went into the studio and hooked up my interface and yes the audio engine light goes out during recording. but I still hear the guitar and it records fine. Next doesn't matter if the track is armed or not, if I toggle the echo on I can hear the guitar but with a delay. Toggle it off and I have to monitor at my interface input which is what I always do. The mystery remains that you say the track MUTE light comes on when you start playback ( or REC? )

Further investigation I discover yet another feature I have never seen, Right clicking the MUTE button brings up some options. Look there for a clue. There is a automatic mute function that looks suspicious. A red tiny switch will be seen on the button when activated.

Check the M-Audio Control panel for the Delta44. You may not have it setup correctly.

Do you have the Delta44 connected to an external mixer? How are you monitoring the output?

I just copied the midi track into a new project and it works fine.

I don't know what was wrong with the first project but I must have deleted or changed something...................
