Using wireless iDevice controller like AC-7 as remote while recording in vocal booth?

People are saying good things about apps like AC-7 since you can use it in the vocal booth without having someone else in the control room.

So let's say you are in the booth, with your mic and iDevice. Since your computer/interface/preamp is in the control (not in the booth), where do you plug your headphones into? Will your hear the project's playback if you plug it into the iDevice?

I can understand about the mic, since you can buy a super long XLR cable... but headphone cables aren't nearly as long usually.

I had custom cables made at Markertec. The factory happens to be located near me at Saugerties, NY, but you can order online at markertec.com They made a 100' mic cable and headphone extension cable that I use between bedrooms in my house.

Can you imagine if there was a way to stream the audio playback from SONAR to AC-7 wirelessly so that you could plug headphones into your iPhone/iPad and hear everything as if the headphones were plugged into your audio interface?

The only wired connection you would need is from your mic to your interface/preamp... Now that would be cool

OK, sorry to take this thread a little off topic but could someone please explain to me how to configure AC-7 mini to work with X1?
I've looked all over the net but can't seem to find any set up instructions.

I never used any sort of control surface so I don't have any idea even to where to start.
I do own Garrigus' x1 power.
Is there something in there that might explain it and I'm just over looking it?

Thanks for any and all help.

I don't actually own AC-7 (yet), but from the research I've done, I believe this is how:

Download rtpMIDI from here and install it onto your computer. Click the + sign under "My Sessions" and enable the checkbox next to the newly created session. Close rtpMIDI.

Open a project in SONAR, and go to Preferences > MIDI > Control Surfaces. Click the yellow star button on the top-right corner, and a new pop-up will show. Click the midi devices button on the bottom-right of the popup, and make sure you enable the session you created from rtpMIDI. Click ok. Then, when you're returned to the previous window, select "Mackie Control" from the the dropdown menu (should be the last one) and select the session you created in rtpMIDI for both the input and output dropdown menus. Click ok and apply and close out of the Preferences Window.

If you open AC-7 and select SONAR, it should connect with your computer. If not, either you missed a step above, or my instructions are wrong (hey, at least I tried...). Let me know if this works!

So far it's a no go.
    Maybe because it's AC-7 mini.
    Been trying all day.
    I'm tired.

When and if I get it working I'll post how here.

Supposedly there's a setting in AC-7 that i need to set to Sonar but I can't find any settings anywhere.

Mike, take a look at V-Control. There's a free version to try it. I have both V-Control Pro and AC-Core on my new iPad, and I haven't touched AC-Core since purchasing V-Control. The only downside is the price of the Pro app.

Still can't get V-Control to function, AC7 no problem.

There is also this now, which works well with rtpMidi (well).

There is also Splashtop which, IIRC, Noel said can stream the audio to your iPad if you use MME drivers, not ASIO.

I find they are all finicky to set up, especially the way the Mackie Control Surface is "Connecting" for ages.

    Cheers,

    Thanks guys.
    Matt, that's my main issue.
I only have the iPhone 4s. I dont own an iPad yet.

I did find a button on the transport screen that says MODE.
When you click it it scrolls through all the DAW compatibility modes.
I set it to Sonar but haven't given it a try yet.
I'll let ya'll know after lunch.

Let me know if you need any additional help. I have it working on my iPhone 4s, iPad 1, and iPod touch. I recently just deleted the ctrlsurface.dat and TTSSEQ.ini files because AC-7 was functioning a little wacky. According to Cake support, those files sometimes get corrupt. After setting up the Mackie Control again, everything works fine now.

    I use wireless headphones sometimes.

I also have 20' extensions for when I need to use multiple headphones for a session.

Hmmm.  I've often wondered why people go with wireless remote devices.   I have a wireless router (cheap-cheap) in my house anyway, so I just take my netbook into the booth with me and RDP to my console.  I get 100% of the functionality of my workstation with zero hassle.

Oh, and for headphone extension cables (any cable for that matter) go to monoprice.com and buy premium 25 ft gold plated mini plug extension cables for $5.27 each.

I just kept it simple, conduit under the floor that I use to route Video, Mouse, Keyboard cables back to my DAW in the machine closet. Basically, my Vocal Booth is just a secondary control station for the DAW, the primary is in the mixing room.  I have no control over it in the Drum room though except for "blind" wireless keyboard control. I'll have to borrow my wife's i-Pad and experiment ...
