MIDI issue

Sonar X1, East/West pianos

I'm trying to get a clean performance from these great EastWest pianos, but I can't seem to do it.  I often get notes that are played together (or input by mouse into the score on the same beat) coming out non-simultaneously.  I can play live and the notes will play together, but playback doesn't play it back the same way. This may occur with other instruments, but the delays are tiny, so in a complex score they may disappear.  But with sparse textures, such as a piano comping simply, it really shows.  It is driving me mad.

How might I fix this?

What is you MIDI tick setting in Preferences? Also check out the position of the notes in the PRV.

Check that Input Quantize is not on also.

Input Quantize comes up in the Pro Channel window when you click on the midi track corresponding to East West Piano's.

What it does is, it quantizes your midi track as you are recording it so if you're timing is off, it is automatically corrected.

There is no Pro Channel window for MIDI.  You must mean the 2nd  channel strip in the track inspector.

"MIDI tick" I can't find.  I went through all the preferences menus.  Is there another term I'm looking for?  I've tried the buffer number, but switching that made no difference.

I'm not terribly knowledgeable, but I'm fearless -- I'll dig for what I need to fix.

    Yes, you are 100% right.

It always throws me off because it has the ProCh tab highlighted even though it's a Midi track I clicked on over in the inspector area.

The notes are precisely lined up.  It isn't a quantize issue.

Ah, I see.  It is set at the default 960 (used to be 120 when it was still "Cakewalk", and simpler to calculate in my head).  I just now set it to 120, but it makes no difference.  It plays exactly the same wrong way every time.

One last thing is open up the track in the Event List and check the timing of the notes.

Another last thing, try the track in another piano synth. True Pianos might work for you. It will see if its a synth issue or a Sonar issue.

In the Event List you should not see notes with identical time. MIDI is a serial protocol and no two notes on the channel can have the same time. It can be very close though.

I've tried Ivory Pianos, and I suspect that my computer is underpowered for this work.  EastWest is better, but I wish I could figure out why I get a different performance through live play than playback. Hmm.  Thanks, gentlemen.

What are your system specs ?.

If you can play live without the delay, then recording MIDI and playback should also work equally well.

We really need more information about your system to help.

Please let us know your full system specifications, and anything else extra which might come to mind.

    What O/S ?.
    What version of Sonar ?
What version of EW Play ?
Audio / MIDI interfaces, drivers etc ?.

Ahh, also, when you say "Play live", is that from inside X1, or using the standalone version of EW Play ?.
