Scratch Track - Comments Please

For you songwriters out there;
Please evaluate
  • Context
  • Hook
  • Melody
  • Lyrics
  • Ear Candy

For you producers/Sound Engineers, please tell me what I can't hear. Sounds ok on my monitors, not ok on a laptop.

What's left to do - need electric guitars instead of acoustic, need a real drum track instead of a loop, need to finish the song, harmonies, effects, then mastering. But I'd love some pointers.

Thank you!

This song has a world of promise.  Your voice reminded me of Chris Cornell of Soundgarden as did the song.  Yet, it wasn't derivative at all.  I know you want to add to this, but I liked the rawness.  You've got your hook and ear candy already, so you should only take care not to overproduce this.  I look forward to hearing the final version of this.

    All the best,

Thank you Lynn. I still feel like I have no clue what I'm doing mixing my own stuff. I just am not doing it often enough to get the best results.

I kind of like it as an acoustic tune.  Maybe some electric embellishment, but the acoustic rocks.

Good vocals too.  Some harmony on the chorus/hook would be cool too.  Good tune.

    Hi Joshua
I suggest doing this bass, drums, electric only.  Jimi Hendrix style.  No tracking.  Do you have a fuzz face laying around?  Make it big fat and in your face.

Yes, keep the acoustic for the main riff and maybe bring in an electric for the chorus. From the song point of view, maybe simplify the chorus - there seems to be too many words without room for a breath.
You have a great voice and this song has a ton of potential IMO.

Defo keep the acoustic for the main riff, it is the first thing that stayed in my head as finished (The start is captivating). Although the vocals sound amazing (they do sound like chris cornell) I wasnt mad about the vocal melody and a lot if was constantly in the higher end of the vocal range which can fatigue interest quickly, but certainly wasnt a show stopper.

Great work, your doing fine in both the mixing and songwriting end, fact.

Thank you all for your feedback. I think I'm going to keep the acoustic and find a way for the electric to "push" the accents and dynamics.

I've got a lot of interesting ideas already on how to add magic to this.

I've retracked all the drums, so they are correct now and I've re-tracked the bass parts. So - now I need to figure out a way to get that acoustic back on there without all the room noise though. I don't have any reflexion filters or anything, so there's going to be a lot of noise that you'll hear as soon as any real heavy compression kicks in.  I appreciate all the help so far!

I should have another version in about a week.
