Do any of you know the answer to this question?
My RME Interface has 12 inputs. I'm not likely to ever need more than that in my room (especially with the MIDI drums). However, it has two ADAT In/Outs. My Tascam FW-1884 has ADAT In/Out. If my Tascam is a slave to the RME as far as ADAT I/O is concerned, when I plug a mic into the Tascam am I using the A/D converters of the Tascam or the RME? I want to say it's the converters of the RME Fireface UFX. If it's the converters of the RME then it would mean that I could also keep my Berhinger AD8000 as well since it would slaved into the RME 2nd ADAT I/O.

I'm not a hundred percent sure but yes, I'm 99% sure though I use to slave my Creamware cards to my Presonus Firestudio which has better converter's. Neb

Ok thinking about it def here is why. My A2 compressor has it's own Spidif convertor card, costs 500 dollars. You would slave my MOTU unit to that so were using the A2 convertors. Neb

bapu as far as I know if you slave another device to your RME (using the ADAT inputs) eg the Tascam and plug a mic into the Tascam it is the converters inside the Tascam you are using, not the RME. (for the Mic that is) The ADAT connection is merely a way of passing an already digital signal into the RME. Same as the Behringer ADA8000. If you plug a Mic into that, it is the convereters in that you are using. The ADA8000 is not bad BTW and one of the better things that Behringer make. I use it on drums and it sounds excellent. But I must add this though. If you monitor out (analog) from your RME then you are using the converters on the way out for monitoring eg Tascam converters on the way IN and RME for monitoring on the way OUT. You may get a slightly different sound as a result but I am sure it won't be significant. I would be sure the converters on the Tascam and the ADA8000 would also be Ok too. Ben is also incorrect in his post below. The device that you plug your signal into is the device that is doing the conversion. But he does make a point about master and slave options though. It is important to make the RME the master and whatever device you plugin to the ADAT input as the slave. You may get some digital glitches if you don't. The RME will send its digital clock out to the external units (via ADAT) and the external units need to see it and lock onto it. The ADA8000 has a little switch right around the back for all those master/slave options. Don't know about the Tascam.

But it has always been my understanding that you are using the pres and the converters of the first unit, then it's converted to digital for the transfer to the 2nd unit. the 2nd unit then only sends the digital signal to the computer along with any converted digital from the 2nd unit. in other words, you're using the pres and the converters of the tascam and the RME only becomes a medium of transfer.

The ADAT connector is an optical digital plug thingy. If you plug a mic or Alembic or some other analog (Am-alog?) thingy into a device, and that device has a digital ADAT output thingy...

Ed, if you connect the mixer via adat to the RME and connect a mike to the mixer, you use the mixers converters.

Here is what I am basing my theory on: http://www.tlaudio.co.uk/docs/products/DO-2.shtml This card has it's own convertors and you slave the MOTU to this device, so you are using the TL AUDIO cards convertors. As long as you can change the slave and master, the RME convertors can be the master convertors. So you would plug your Tascam interface or your Behringer ADAT interface into your RME and as long as that is the master, those are convertors are used. Sorry Beagle, I a 100 percent sure on this now. Neb

Thanks all. By consensus it appears what I "thought" was not true. So in the end, as Jeff says I have "not a bad" unit in the AD8000 and my Tascam was not "bad" it's just that the RME is better and with 12 channels those will always be my first choice inputs mic'd thingies (i.e. Vox, cabinets etc) and the others would be for line feeds (i.e. DI, line outs etc).

I too once recorded live drums with them. Where I did proper mic'ing I got good results, The Tascam is "slaved" via front panel controls. I have it slaved. I'll probably just keep the ADA8000 too since the RME can handle it too.

Also confirmed on the RME site. Conversion happens at the source device. ADAT is just a digital shuttle bus.
