Popping Sound Linked to Latency Slider

I just purchased Sonar X1 Producer this week, and am just starting to learn PC music production. I installed the software and all patches through D and I notice a popping sound at regular intervals when I play back the tutorial music supplied with the software. The interval for the popping sound increases when I increase the latency slider, and goes away when I slide it to a faster setting, but I've found that sound distorts when I select faster latency, so there is no happy medium. Also I can hear the popping sound at slower latency settings even when I mute all tracks.

I'm using a Sound Blaster X-Fi card, with an Intel Core i7 2600K processor.

Thank you in advance for any help with this, and let me know if you need any additional info from me to better diagnose.

It does not show an asio option in the output drivers list. It just shows a SB X-Fi SpdifOut and four SB X-Fi Audio to choose from.

Is there another place I should be looking for an "asio" mode?

I don't think anyone has ever said that the SB cards have good low latency drivers.
