Complete Newbie Needs Help/Understanding
Hello, My first experience with recording software was Sonar 4XL. I didn't do much with it because I wasn't serious about recording. Well years later I am now serious about recording so I reloaded the old software on my computer. But I now want to use EZDrummer and I couldn't get EZDrummer to work. My friend had Sonar 6 on his old computer and EZDrummer worked fine. He now has a new computer with X1 so he gave me his copy of Sonar 6 and I wasn't able to get EZDrummer to work. I then downloaded the trial version of X1 Producer and I was able to get the EZDrummer window to open up but I don't have sound from either one. My friend tells me I need a interface like a Line 6 Toneport. But with Sonar 4XL I had sound all though it was on another computer. So here's my question: I have a new 2011 Dell XPS Studio 7100 running Windows 7 Professional. Why can't I just load the X1 software and EZDrummer software and make it work? On my other computer I just plugged a Mic cable with a 1/8 jack in the computer and miced my amp and bam I had sound coming from my speakers and the software recorded it. What has changed and what do I need to get my computer to record and use EZDrummer?

In SONAR 4 you need the VST Adapter to use VSTs. Did you use one? "Wasn't able to get EZD to work" doesn't actually tell us anything. How exactly did you try to use it? Do you know in general how soft synths are used? If not, theres a tutorial about it in the X1 help. The integrated soundchips are really not capable of fluent DAW work, so you do yourself a big favour if you get yourself a proper audio interface.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

ASIO is likely the answer to the problem. I can get version 8 to run on my laptop like a tape recorder, but inserting plug ins kills it using the onboard sound chip. Once I got a USB ASIO interface it was all good.

Thanks for the responses even though my question is pretty vague. As the title says I am a complete newbie so I don't know what ASIO and DAW mean. Here's my problem in nut shell. I want to make my computer a recording computer. I only need 2 inputs as it's a desk top and I won't be dragging it out to record a whole band. Right now I have the trial version of X1 and though I would love to buy it I'm hoping to get by with sonar 6. I'll be recording guitar tracks and using EZDrummer for the drum tracks. I will e-mail the recordings to my friend who will record the bass line from his house and e-mail the song back. After doing some research I've learned a little bit about what I need to do. However I would much rather hear what I'm doing through my computer speakers and not have to wear headphones to hear. I'm looking at buying the Line 6 Toneport UX2 because it's cheap and I have a long way to go before I'll feel comfortable enough to advance into more serious equipment. My problem right now is I can't make EZDrummer work with Sonar 6. By that I mean I can install it on the computer but I can't find it through Sonar 6 as a soft synth or anything else. So I can't even open it to do anything with it. With X1 I can find it as a soft synth and get it to open but I have no sound from either X1 or EZD. So what do I need to do to run Sonar 6 with EZD and not have to use head phones to hear. I'm kind of a purist and would probably choose to mic my amp over using the Line 6 but if it's cheaper to buy the Toneport then to upgrade my sound card I'll go that route. And by cheaper I'm mean $200 - $300 if it's only $50 - $100 then no biggie. Thanks in advance.

I should add that I refer to using headphones because I'm told if I use a Toneport type interface I will only be able to hear via the headphones.

I have been recording for a few years, and this is what I have picked up. you can get a small usb mixer which would also work, for $100 or less. ASIO, i beleive is the apple audio format (seems to be preferred drivers for most interfaces), WDM is the windows audio format. Try chaning the driver in your version of SONAR to use WDM drivers, then you will hopefully see your sound card, if you want. DAW = Digital Audio Workstation. When/if you get an interface, it will act as your preamp inputs, sound card, headphone monitor etc (you can attach speakers to the interface). The tone ports/guitar ports are pretty much the same as any other interface, they just come with guitar amp modeling software and may be optimized for guitar players (perhaps have additional tools/software for recording guitars), however they have pretty much the same preamps as most other interfaces. I have a friend who has the guitar port and the mic pre is pretty good and overall the unit is very cool. If you are going to utilize midi, make sure you choose an interface which accepts midi inputs. Go to any musical instrument seller's website and browse the interfaces. you will see there are several in the $80-$200 range, and all are similar. the USB mixer works like a mixer and send 2 tracks in and out. Hope this helps a little.

I know I'm probably confusing matters with this response - but another possible option to make life easier =with the Realtek High Definition Audio card (I'm assuming you are using a laptop since this is where the Realtek units are most seen) is to look into a product named ASIO4ALL - it is an ASIO driver for use with cards that generally only offer WDM driver support or have poor implementation of ASIO drivers. It is a free third party optional audio driver that may solve some of the issue you will face with the Realtek unit. Either that or the preferable option of getting a separate audio interface, there are several that can be bought at a reasonable price point based upon the features you may need. Hope I've not added more confusion.

ToneWarrior, can you see EZdrummer in the cakewalk vst directory? If this question doesn't make sense then we may have been answering the wrong questions. Glen

I can see EZDrummer when I use X1 but not with Sonar 4XL or 6. Jind; I'm using a desk top. When I right click on the little speaker in my task bar at the bottom of my screen and select play back devises a little window pops up with 3 items. The first one is a monitor ATI HDMI Output but it says it's unplugged. The second item says Speakers Default Device. The third one says Realtek Digital Output Ready. They all say High Definition Audio only the Monitor Says ATI High Definition Audio and the speakers and the other device say Realtek High Definition Audio. Also the Speaker has a green check next to it. In the window they are listed like this; ATI HDMI Output ATI High Definition Audio Unplugged Speaker Realtek High Definition Audio Default Device Realtek Digital Output Realtek High Definition Audio Ready They have little pictures next to them. Of course the monitor is a monitor and speaker a speaker but the third one looks like an external DVD drive and nothing like a sound card. I don't have a external DVD drive or Hard Drive. Tracey thanks that helps a lot. ASIO and WDM make a lot more sense now. Thanks for everyone's help.

Hey TW, In your trial X1 When you load EZD, how are you doing it from the start? Are you inserting a midi track and manually setting it all up? Try going up top to [Insert], select SoftSynth, and work your way over to your EZD. Not sure how EZD looks or works but you might have to load a kit once you have it loaded onto a midi track. Have you tried Session Drummer or anything else and do you get sound from it? On your speaker playback-select the RealTek as your default device if you want computer speakers to play. If you have a stereo with somesort of aux in, you can come off of the computer head phone jack into your stereo and use them for monitors. Lets see if we cant get some sort of sound out of your computer first though
