Windows 7 Problem

Hi to all, newby to this forum. I have been using Sonar 5 Studio Edition for a few years on XP Pro with a Soundblaster card with no problems. I have just set up a new Dell laptop with Windows 7 x 64. I installed Sonar 5 on it today. I am not showing any Midi inputs and output is showing "Microsoft MIDI  Mapper" Question is, do I need to install more drivers/a seperate sound card to run Sonar. Sorry if it is a stupid question but I never had a problem with XP. Thanks

You will always get MUCH  better results using a dedicated interface than any sort of "Soundblaster"

If you're using the integrated soundchip, you don't have any MIDI input or output to show, unless you've connected a USB MIDI device. How did you use MIDI in your previous system?
The GS Wavetable Synth is most likely showing? That's the poor substitute if you can't get softsynths working.

The integrated chip will not make you a happy musicmaker :0/

Now, when you've changed to 64 bit environment (I assume your previous was 32 bit?) you need to to take that in consideration when setting up your system. You need 64 bit compatible software and hardware for everything.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.

Thanks for the speedy replies. My XP is a 64 bit system (i'm still using it)  only used the Soundblaster card on that one. I do not connect equipment i.e. keyboards to my system, I just work with the midi files as is.  Bristol/Kalle, any recomendations for a decent interface ? I presume it would be a USB connected one. Thanks.

Check the home page of forum member Beagle, there are several suggestions on cards that work with SONAR.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.

Also Sonar will only run in widows 7 64 bit starting with Sonar 8. Even Sonar 7 is listed as un tested but it works for me if I stay 32 bit. If your only messing with MIDI and soft synths, then any interface will fit the bill, just make sure it has drivers for W7 64 bit. If your not using a mike then you save money as that puts the price up, the quality of mike preamps and how many. They even make MIDI only interfaces presuming your using a MIDI controller. But now you can also use a USB input controller. Seems you can get by with using ASIO4all with a MIDI only set up. It will be a crap shoot as Sonar really likes to see good drivers. On board sound is all over the map with quality and there can be a lot of background noise. If I fire up Wave Lab and put it into record mode with nothing plugged in- on every on board sound card I've had it will show up to -40Db of static noise floor. This goes dead quiet the minute I swap to a USB interface.

Cheers Kalle, I will look into that. Cactus, thanks for your input. I usually record with a Fostex VF160 from scratch but now and then I will maybe use a midi file for percussion and a string/keyboard sound. I have a mike preamp that I use for my VF so thats not a problem. The point of buying a Windows laptop was when I am away from home I could produce music on the go. I have a Macbook Pro but I don't particularly like Garageband and I wanted to work with Sonar. Talking about percussion, does anyone know how get into the drum track in Sonar and reset panning levels. I'm OK with any other instrument it's just the drums.

Cactus. Just to let you know I tried the Asio4all driver and it's working good enough for what I need. Thank you
