Basic questions about Sonar X1

Hi, I'm a new user on this board. I used to use Cakewalk back in the late 80s on the IBM PC platform and then stopped MIDI composing/arranging for a long time until now. But this time, I bought an iMac. I'm here because I've given up on Apple Logic Pro which constantly comes up with application bugs and issues, and I'm looking for a more reliable MIDI sequencer. Cakewalk comes to mind since it was the first MIDI sequencer I ever owned.

I hope a real expert will respond to me, someone who has used Sonar X1 for MIDI (don't care about live) music. Here are my questions:

1) Does Sonar X1 support 3rd party plugins (e.g., the ones I have are Komplete 8 Ultimate, East West Instruments, Real Guitar, and Vienna Instruments)
2) I know Sonar X1 comes with its own sound module plugins, but are they good? I particularly like orchestral instruments/percussions and drums.
3) Is it buggy? I hope I get an honest answer on this, because I just suffered from many bugs in Apple Logic Pro over the past couple of months, and I'm just so fed up, I'm switching to a different sequencer!

I'd like to re-emphasize that I only do MIDI music, so if someone who does the same and has used Sonar X1 a lot could respond to me, I would be very appreciative and grateful.

Thanks.

1 X1 supports third party plugins very well indeed.
2 It comes with extensive sound libraries and synths. A general purpose collection.
3 X1 has bugs. No DAW is without bugs. Most of them are not major in X1. But that depends on your use of X1.

I think its one of the very best MIDI sequencers around.

Billy (ba_midi) may also have some input here. You could PM him.

ditto this, especially about midi sequencers.  And yeah, there are bugs, but I am able to work around them. I cannot currently think of one that interferes with the midi things I do.  I suspect many/most major DAWs that date back ten years or more are starting to hit the buggy part of the legacy curve and will all have some issues.  I would expect PT to perhaps be the least buggy of the old-line, but midi is not what it is known for, almost an afterthought IMO. Plus, there are restrictions to PT that while propietary help them with stability.  Of them I chose and stick with Sonar.  Reaper is interesting because it is a recent addition to the pack and doesn;lt bring the baggage of years of updates in the middle of a cutthroat rush to market, but it is immature in comparison for those same reasons. I couldn't speak to the midi use of it at all.  If you were happy with Cake of old for midi, I bet you'll do fine with Sonar. Grab a trial download and see.

+1  Midi is very good on X1.

Loading up 3rd party plug- ins cause the great majority of my crashes (which are not that big of a deal) .  Once you learn what plug-ins cause trouble and why,  Sonar will run very stable.

I have all the libraries you mentioned and plus a couple more.  I run them all with little trouble.

I would make sure to use the 64 bit version of Kontact and have all the latest updates.  I have 12 gigs of ram and will load 10+ gigs of instruments and have good results.  And score to picture without a hiccup.  Good luck.

I agree that no DAW is without bugs. But the bugs I've been encountering with Apple Logic Pro is MAJOR. For example, I set up data to send the values from 0 to 127 to a specific continuous controller (e.g. Modulation Wheel, Expression, etc.) It was sending only up to 81!! I was able to confirm this with an Apple Support tech, and his recommendation was for me to create a NEW project and reenter all the data!?? If this happened in the middle of a project where more than a hundred hours have already been expended by me, I would be in a state of grief!

Then there was also the issue where if I copied a region (basically just a designated area with some notes) and pasted it to the same track. Somehow, ALL the notes were moved to the right by a duration of approximately 1/32 note. It doesn't happen all the time. Aside from moving all the notes one by one back to where they should be, I was lost for a while there. I eventually found a workaround, but seriously, a buggy copy/paste?! I only found out about it when my music was sounding "off" timing. This wasn't a big bug, but it certainly was extremely annoying.

As long as the bugs are not major, not show-stopping (nor destructive), and as long as there are easy and quick workarounds, I can live with them. But what I went through with Apple Logic Pro is simply unacceptable.

So I hope you're saying the bugs in Sonar aren't too debilitating? If it's not too much to ask, can you just briefly describe to me the worst bug you can remember off the top of your head?

     . . . describe the "worst bug" ? . . . really ? . . . . dude, just download the demo and try it out.

None of the issues I've run across using Sonar X1 are show stoppers, depends how you use it, and very much depends on your computer and audio card capabilities / settings.

Do you use it mostly for composition, audio recording, midi recording, live music, 10 tracks, 70 tracks, all of the above ?

If you have the right interface, the midi in Sonar is relatively bulletproof.

The only thing I would worry about is having the right computer. If the OP is running Logic its going to be a Mac of some  sort. I do not recommend running X1 on a Mac. It can be done but very few of us would be able to trouble shoot it for you.

I've heard that Cakewalk Sonar works well with Bootcamp, but not Parallels, which are both PC emulation softwares running on MAC platform. I have not heard whether Sonar has/ or is planning to go MAC ?

They say this but I have my doubts. First Areo is very important for smooth graphics. Than direct control of hardware via drivers seems very problematic. Its hard enough to get a PC to run X1 well. I can't imagine how difficult it would be on an unsupported OS.

    - makes sense John, Sonar is designed and optimized for a PC world . . .  so - PILBY- do you have a "newish" PC kicking around in your back closet somewhere ?  . . . 'cause you'll probably need that to switch from Logic/ MAC  to Sonar/PC to work properly.

SONAR X1 on a Mac? Yes, you can! Posted in Other, Promotions, SONAR, Tips, Windows 7 by Mike Trujillo [Cakewalk] on 7 Feb 2012

A question I am frequently asked is, “Do you guys make SONAR X1 for the Mac?” The answer to which is no, SONAR X1 is made for Windows. But do not despair, there is a solution! For Macs with Intel processors there’s an application called Bootcamp which will allow you to install the Windows operating system on your Mac.Unlike some of the other applications that allow you to run Windows inside the Mac OS, Bootcamp allows you to boot exclusively into Windows or Mac OS on startup. This is the optimal method of running Windows as all of the Mac’s resources are available. (more…)

Thanks for the clarifying link Ampfixer, I knew I'd read this somewhere !

Now all we need is a response from someone on the forum who has actually tried running Sonar on Boot Camp / MAC, and the issues (or not?) they have run into . . .
