How do I use Plug-in meters to record
I just got the Klanghelm VU meter plug-in and want to use it for recording. I'm set up to record now, the Sonar meter is working fine, and other than my playing, the recording is going fine, however, I see nothing on the Klanghelm meter (in the the track FX bin) as I record. It moves on playback, but not on record.
I have a meter in the Master Bus and that's okay, but I want to see just my acoustic guitar in the track.
Anyone ??? THANKS!

Turn the track's input echo on. Not sure how to describe the icon, but it's just to the right of the record button.

May ask why you want to use VU meters as a plugin for recording?

yeah you definitely want to use the input meter on your sound interface for recording to avoid clipping, not a plugin or even sonars meters really-

Yeah John and Lanceindastudio, I'm just experimenting. I've been recording with peaks at -12 on my audio interface and that's been working fine, however I'm just learning about levels and metering, so I wanted to compare my recordings with balanced RMS levels vs balanced peak levels. I know Sonar has RMS meters and I'm using those too.
I very much welcome and appreciate tips and suggestions ! Thanks for asking.

The meters in Sonar are as accurate as they come. First they are digital meters and they show the actual level. VU meters are, or their digital emulations, by their very nature can not be accurate. You don't need them nor will your recordings be better by using them.
True VU meters are electro-mechanical devices that have severe problems with transient detection. Thats to say you can't trust them. When you use digital meters for digital data you are getting an accurate display.

Yeah John that's exactly what I've been reading. It's just hard to see the Sonar RMS values, I was hoping since the VU meter scale is short and right up in my face, I'd get an idea of my RMS values. I've seen other meters that will do that for me, but can't afford them.

Get Voxengo's Span it has great meters and they are big. Oh and its free. Span
