Seems to me that there are a few different meanings of reference being muddled here. I agree that there are specific albums that are better for assessing speakers than others. I don't think that's got a whole lot to do with the kind of reference listening you might do while actually mixing.

A synth type track with electro drums, I have been writing, without any vox yet, I took off  all the fx
and just put the TrackS3 Classic EQ and a little Sonitus verb on the master bus, and what a difference
it sounded like I wanted it to sound, but when I put it back through my monitors (Edirol MA-7A) again it sounded
a little toppy, not quite as much as the first time, but still a little too much compared to the phones.
I have decided, yes I am going to buy a decent set of monitors, now to do some research !!!!!

John, one bit of advice. Make yourself a reference CD and take to to the various music shops in your area and A/B speaker sets. I'd start with Bob Katz' Honour Roll of reference tracks ( http://www.digido.com/honor-roll.html) but whatever music you choose the most important thing is that you are as familiar as possible with the music.  Try your best to know all the ins and outs of the music you're using before A/B'ing it.

Good luck, and I'm sorry in advance for the damage about to be done to your pocketbook :)

Hi Dean, thanks for the advice, I did just what you said today, took a reference C/D with me, don't know
how much you know about monitors, probably a lot more than me !!!! But I think I'm going to go with the
Yamaha HS80's, they seem to do the job for me, do you know anything about them ?

Hi John,
I really don't know anything about the HS80's...haven't been monitor shopping for a year or two. Even if I did though, you probably want to take opinions about monitors very lightly. Monitors are very personal, the ones I ended up with (which I love) are really hated by a couple of other folks around my area who's opinions I really respect. Bottom line, I before buying I got to A/B them in my room and I just liked the ones I got better. They just seemed to reproduce what I was looking for with more clarity. My buddy still disagrees with me....and that's OK.  They don't have to use them every day (for the record, I ended up with some Focals and some folks I know who like JBL's really thought I should have gone with 6328's).

In any case, it's personal. Listen for the individual parts of the reference material. Particularly the bass...is it hyped? Missing? Focused or does it sound too open? I actually have notes that accompany my reference material...things like "listen for the sub bass at 28 seconds". Evaluate based on that and then buy the ones that seem right.

Good luck
Dean

John, FWIW, I use both the HSM80s and 50s.  The 80s are a full range set, so that should do you fine if your room is treated  properly.
