Complete Newbie alert

Ive just bought sonar x1 producer after years of using atari system which never failed me. Have been looking at the min spec and Pc world advised to possibly look at a laptop running i5 processor. Would this be suitable for general recording needs? Previously I was running around 16 tracks on atari  but may look to up that slightly now with VST synths. Would also record vocals and possibly a guitar. Like I say, a complete newbie so any help really appreciated. I have also purchased M audio sound card to use.

    Welcome to the foum.
What are your current computer specs and are they at least the minimum?

Hi, specs for old PC aren't great. think its 2mb ram but 1.7 ghz processor and about 30/40gb hard drive if that. THings were so much simpler with an atari 1040st running cubase!!!

First, what ever computer you choose, you will want more.  Some here will tell you that you need the biggest and the best.  I think an i5 is more than enough, but you may want to reconsider the laptop portion of your spec unless you really need the mobility. CPU speed is probabably more important than the number of cores.  Laptop CPU speed seems to be different than desktop speed (power savers and other differences).

You need a lot of display (screen) space and laptops just don't seem to cut it in that area.  If you do get a laptop make sure that you get one that will drive an external monitor (most do) and buy the biggest monitor that you can fit into the budget.  Most people with desktops are running multiple monitors.
