Sometimes I screw up and hit more than one at a time. It sounds awful but I fantasize that I'm being momentarily creative.

    I'm a bass player, and some times I strum some powerchords ( I- V - VIII ( so 3 notes at a time))

So only then I am qualified as a 'musician' ???

Reminds me of this newsbit, on the disregard of bass players:

I assume this is a humourous thread Craig...

I mean, you still have to play them

    a In the right order
b With the right groove and timing
c Knowing your scales better then many guitar players
    d With the right dynamics
    e With an appropriate tone

So, yay, I would say they are musicians...

I would say 'Ask The Ox' but sadly he's not around any more...

This is really a messed up question and insult to bass players.  Here is a video to answer your question. Watch this bass player play chords and everything else in his bass solo.

when they only play one note at a time?

    ;)

You might as well say that no bass player has enough musical knowledge to know how to play 2 notes together ... not to mention do something totally different that adds/makes the totality of the music/song be totally different.

Maybe the issue is you have never played with someone that knows music better than you do ... and that has less to do with the bass, than it does with anything else!

But then, if you have only heard rock'n'roll ... that's all you know about bass use, no?

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

To be fair, he may have been really proud of that - we don't know how bad he was previously.
That could have been 2 years ago and he has been practicing for 8 hours a day, 7 days a week and now he's brilliant (but I doubt it)

That Vail Johnson solo is also one of my fave bass solos. I have got a video of the complete piece. It is pretty long in total. There was some incredible bass playing before the final bass solo. He and Kenny did some exchanges, he copied the sax lines perfectly on the bass. Some of them were quite ridiculous.

Love that drummer too. Kenny even played great! Am I going to get into trouble for saying that?

Well, to pick a nit (what does a picked nit sound like anyway, as compared to a strummed nit?):

As an upright bass player, there are times when one has to play double stops and even the occasional triple stop... so every now and again more than one note gets played at a time.

And jazz is another entire world...

    But...

According to many no, 'cause if the classical bassist was any good, he would be playing cello, and the orchestration books that comment, "The sound of the bass soon palls the ear," must surely be correct.

The viola has it even worse... standard (bad) upper strings joke: if the violinist is good, he/she plays 1st violin, if no real ability, 2nd violin, and if totally insane, viola.

If nothing else, the upright player can brag that he gets to finger notes on the longest strings in the orchestral string sections (to which others will reply, "All the easier to play out of tune.").

Then there is the old pop joke: Why do the drums always have to play?  Answer: no drums, bass solo.

Or perhaps even worse... a certain forum member playing Am, Am, Am, Am...

    No, they should be eaten.

Ensure they piping hot throughout to eliminate the possibility of getting a bout salmonella though. And of course don't freeze and re-heat them after cooking.

    HTH.

Now watch someone accuse me of Bassism.

The guy trying to play Zep was funny..... why did he have no shirt on?...... why did I keep picturing BAPU in my mind?  Was that a moob?

A few years ago, I was attending a church where a black guy was playing the bass in the band. He played a 6 string and pretty much laid down a strong bottom end groove in the music.  Solid playing.

However.... one Sunday he played a solo.  He played Jesus loves me..... the song we associate with kids....  It was a combination of instrumental and vocal..... the cat played jazz chords on the bass! Not just one or two but entire passages of the song like a jazz guitarist would play while incorporating the melody into the chord inversions..... totally jaw dropping amazing. I believe he got a standing O. And well deserved too.
