Comfortably numb

here is the story. On the way home from a game of football (soccer) the other night I triggered a red light camera.
The traffic light was overhead and 50 feet ahead of where you had to stop. The white line where you had to stop had been worn away so that you could hardly see it. I stopped about 10 feet over the white line after realizing that I had stopped in the wrong place and reversed back to where I should be.
So, I got a letter in the mail with a photo of the car and a close up of the license plate and a note telling me that I could watch all of this online.
I watched the video and, right enough, everything I had remembered happening was clearly there on the video. So, I called up the number to contest the violation to find out that the only way to contest it is to go to a hearing in person and it may take all day!
The fine is $50 and has to be paid within 14 days. Taking a day off will cost me far in excess of that.
Of course, I'm going to have to pay it but unfortunately, this is what's wrong with the world. We (I) take crap like this too easily.

What was the actual fine for? Crossing over the white line?

Here in this State there are a lot of people upset because they put those red-light cameras on Interstate Highways of the towns (which actually may be Federal). So they want them taken down, and all of them because it's another money grabber.

That kind of thing happened to me I went to an appointment and parked on the back of the V A clinic. When I got out of the car there were no parking meters in sight that I noticed. After the appointment I came out and could see a pole with a box on it. I didn't even look like a parking meter and was the only one on that side of the street where all the rest were free parking. $20 fine

I set off the camera thingy so there must be a threshold that sets it off.
My problem is that the white line wasn't there - it needs to be repainted - which can clearly be seen on the video and I KNOW I should fight it but because I'm a lazy arse, I'm not going to. Too much flouride in the drinking water ;)

Fight it.  Not just for yourself, but for all of us.  Seriously.  It may cost you more than the fine but if enough people fight these things and tie up the system maybe they will be removed.

I appreciate the solidarity Vanblah but are you going to take a collection for me? If I pay the fine, it will save me $175.00.
The bastards know that which is why they make the fine an amount within reasonable reach.

You failed to mention if you were listening to the radio or a CD (or a cassette tape) at the time. Not even a mention if you were humming your favorite tune.

This is not a music related OT thread.

I'll not report you this time.

I had a similar thing happen and I decided to pay the fine...I'm a wuss I guess, and I didn't want to waste my time in some court room.

It's a racket.

But make absolutely sure there's no insurance cost impact before you just pay it.

I was listening to a bootleg version of Rimshot's new tune at the time and the bass playing distracted me

Was it in AM?  If not, focussing on the bass alone is a felony in most states.

I had the same thing happen. It has to do with rear tires across the line after the light turns red.  You are considered as entering the intersection on red.

This day it was raining and I didn't want to skid, so I braked a bit more gently that I would have on a dry street. Same thing I was backing up ..... the picture they sent me actually showed the backup lights lit up.

A phone call to the number, and the person on the other end told me I could come and present my case to the magistrate. It might take all day so be prepared to spend the day.

The option was to pay $50. As the OP said, being self employed, I make way more then that so it made no sense at all to go to fight it. Pay the bill and forget it.

Several cities here in NC are removing the cameras. It seems the company behind it wasn't paying the full amount that they were supposed to or something like that.

BTW: the camera that got me that day is one of those that have been removed.

It sure is.

It's the same over here.  It's like a stealth tax.

Of course most people will just pay the $50 than bother to fight it.

I'm just glad it's fallen to Daryl to cough up this time and not me.  See, there's always a positive to be found in these things.

Right. If it's a moving violation, your insurance could go up, possibly a lot. In North Carolina, every point against your license raises your insurance by 100%.

Just be glad it wasn't up here. I got one of those camera tickets at Christmas and it was $325. First moving violation in 35 years. I managed to get it reduced to $150 but no pass for having a spotless record for over 3 decades.
