Are you using 32 or 64-bit Sonar? If 32-bit, then you need to have Quicktime installed in order to load .mp4 files. If 64-bit, then there is no Quicktime so Sonar can't load .mp4 files.
Video files consist of a container which is reflected in the extension: .avi, .mp4, .wmv, etc. And they consist of a codec, which is how the video is stored inside the container. Just saying "render your file to .avi" isn't very useful advice, since it all depends on the codec inside the .avi file.
In my tests, a .avi file with the mjpeg codec works best in either 32 or 64 bit Sonar. Followed by .avi with mpeg-4 part 2 codec aka mpeg4, aka xvid and a few other names. .avi with DV codec works well. And .wmv of any Windows Media codec works pretty well.
