Hearing the notes in PRV
I've looked in the manual and can't seem to find the answer. In my old version of CW (PA9) you could left click on a midi note in PRV and preview the sound. Synth tracks would preview the synth note, drum tracks would preview the drum sound, etc. You could even click on a note in the piano grid on the left side to hear the individual notes. How is the accomplished in X1? I know this is gonna be another simple answer, but I can't figure out how to get this to work....?

You've described exactly how it does work in X1, assuming you've routed your midi track to a track or instrument that will produce the sound

Maybe it has something to do with the audio engine? I'll have to check that when I get to the studio tomorrow. But what I was experiencing today is...for instance I have a drum track that plays back fine using Superior Drummer 2.0. I hit play and you hear the track playing back fine. But when the sequencer is stopped...I cannot get any of the midi notes to sound by clicking on them in the PRV...nor can I get any sounds when I click on the piano grid on the left in PRV....

The audio engine will only matter if it is a softsynth. Hardware should still sound. There are options to change the behaviour in Preferences--->Customization-->Editing-->MIDI. The "Velocity Audition" box needs to be checked and whether you want polyphonic audition or not. Polyphonic will play all notes that are selected when you click on one whereas unchecked you'll only hear one note. Personally polyphonic sends me crazy. YMMV.

Thanks guys...! It was indeed the audio engine. I'm still not used to having to turn it on when X1 is stopped. I was trying to preview my drum sounds individually in Superior Drummer. FBB, I tried the Velocity Audition box both checked and unchecked and I can't tell any difference. I did a search of the pdf manual and it gives no description of Velocity Audition. I still have to turn the audio engine back on each time I stop X1, but that's not a problem now that I know to do it.

"Teds_Studio" I did a search of the pdf manual and it gives no description of Velocity Audition. No need to search the manual as you have contextual help available in the "Preferences" dialog, available through the "Help" button for any given page you're currently viewing. Unless you were looking for a more detailed explanation (the available one is a tad short on substance). "Teds_Studio" I still have to turn the audio engine back on each time I stop X1, but that's not a problem now that I know to do it. I only need to check for this when I'm working on more than 1 project at a time and switching back and forth while they are simultaneously opened. But having the engine stop whenever I stop playback of a project as never happened to me, or am I misunderstanding your issue?

Yes...that is what is happening. Every time I stop playback, the audio engine stops. I have to manually click on it to turn it back on. I think I see the issue now although I don't know why this is happening. The "dropout" icon is coming on every time I stop playback. Now...this is not a full project, this is just something I was playing around with. No audio tracks at all, just one drum track, one electric piano track, one flute track and one bass track....all midi and not complicated at all. My sound card is an Echo Mia Midi which should be plenty for playback. I don't even record audio tracks with Sonar...I always record to my Alesis HD24 and then import the tracks into my DAW for mixing.

As a matter of fact...I can play just a couple of seconds with absolutely no midi data playing and when I hit stop the "dropout" icon lights....hmmmm.

Could this be caused by a sample rate mismatch between your interface and the project you're working with. Mine switches automatically but I still have to enable the engine when that happens. Just a shot in the dark and another option for you to look into. Good luck in finding a resolution.

Just to experiment...I muted every single track in the project. Dropout icon still lights when I stop playback. Then I created a new "normal" project with no instruments added the playback and stop works without the dropout icon lighting. I would think it has something to do with the simple project I'm playing with...but can't figure out what it would be since it shows dropout even with all tracks muted, and all tracks are midi.

I checked my Echo sound card...it's set at 48Khz. And Sonar is set for 48Khz. Everything plays back perfectly....even projects with audio tracks. It's just this "dropout" thing that has me puzzled....

OK...I opened up some of my other projects I have and they play back fine without the "dropout" icon lighting. It has to be that simple project I was playing around with. Thanks a bunch for your help and ideas. I'll mill around with it and see what I can come up with...

Problem solved. Under Preferences/Driver Settings/ I clicked on the "ASIO panel" which opened up my ECHO configuration. I changed my buffer size from 256 to 512 and now the "dropout" icon does not light up and the audio engine stays on.

The other "cure" to stop the audio engine dropping out is to check "Play effect tails after stopping" in Preferences-->Audio-->Playback & recording. You should then be able to lower your buffer size to whatever you want and still not lose the engine. HTH.
