Another Corrupt Project! -Solved with the Use of Safe Mode

Well I now have another corrupt project and I haven't done anything to the track.

All I did is load the project, hit play and got "Reset Button" which is all it will do now!  I loaded my backup file it does the same! How would loading the file corrupt it!  I mean shouldn't the file be ok as I didn't save any changes!  This track was working fine this afternoon.

I have rebooted and I have power cycled my interface and this still happens!  I have another track that plays fine.  I am really starting to have doubts about my ability to use Sonar long-term when it seems that it is only a matter of time until it corrupts my project.  I am not at all happy with this.

Sounds like there's some other problem here, maybe your HDD or controller/cables ?.

If you didn't save the project, Sonar wouldn't have corrupted it - Sonar only writes to the project file if you tell it to (or autosave tells it).

If you've got a failing HDD, controller, or flakey cables/connections, then anything might happen when you try to read the project.
And anything might happen when you save one too.

I'd start looking at your hardware, run some diagnostics to thoroughly test your rig.

    Cheers - Cliff

Looking at the specs on your system I noticed you are running X1D.... has this just begun to happen after the upgrade to D?

If so, reverse it to C.  see if that solves it.  I've read numerous complaints about D, to the point that I am not going to install D. I'm staying with C since it is working just fine and I see no reason to upgrade to a version where half the people say it works and the other half say it screwed them up.

I make no judgments on D, but I will not be loading it.

I have had a few "corrupted files" messages but it only occurred when I tried to load an old Cakewalk Pro 8 song from a CD (saved to disk as a bundle file) into my newer version of Music Creator 4. I had 5 songs and IIRC 2 gave the corrupted file message and the other 3 loaded OK.

CliffR - I will definately try testing my system to rule out hardware issues, but the project that works loads off the same drive.

I suppose the next logical thing is to load the track in safemode- which I am aware is an option, but it really anonys me to have to do that as I have been mixing this track for weeks and loose all of my processing work is a huge waste of time!

I will give this a shot later and take it from there.

Ok, so safe mode works - I guess the problem is a plugin, so I can't blame Sonar.

Now I will work to see which plugin and will probably end up remixing the whole track.  Thankfully I run a project studio and don't have any deadlines and a remix of this track is probably in order.

I am just a bit miffed as the track worked fine up until lastnight - It would be nice if a plugin problem would show right away instead of working for a while then breaking later.

Are you saving as a CWB or a CWP? CWBs are prone to corruption because of their size. Best not to use them.

Actually I am saving as CWP, but that is good advice and I was not aware.

Just out of curiosity, if I am using files in my project that are in different directories and on different drives etc., how do I save so that all the relevant audio is saved in the folder where I save my project?  I do have the "copy all audio with project" option set when I save, is that enough?

I've never heard this before. On what do you base this conclusion?

    Hi Scott,

glad to hear you got back into your project OK. Make sure you backup your projects all the time :-)

Regards the "Copy all Audio with Project" option, I believe that's one of the options you need.
There's another option something like 'Use separate Audio Folder" which I've always had checked.

When you import audio, I think you'll find that Sonar copies that audio into the "Audio" folder
under the project which you imported into.

    Cheers - Cliff

Many posts on this forum where people have had corrupt CWB files. Almost everyone recommends using Per Project Folders instead, which is what I do.

Yep it's true, bundle files can be prone to failure, especially if you have upgraded many versions, the more you change your system set up the more you will have problems opening older bundle files. Save as "Per -Project files" is best.

However . . . the OP in this thread started by commenting that his projects were getting corrupted, pointing more to a plugin issue, and part way through the thread he alludes to plugin issues as the source of such woes.

The plugins used may be the key to solving this, are they Sonar or 3rd party plugins ?

There was a time when users were told here not to use bundle files. That has not been the case for many years now. The main reason was the FAT 32 file system had a limit on file size. NTFS is not going to have that problem. So in effect that is very old info and no longer true.

I've heard about this for a million years. :)
Actually, X1D works well. That's always been my sonar story even though I know others have real issues sometimes. The only thing that stands out as the constant factor for my use is the stable soundcard/driver that has floated from machine/OS to other upgraded machine/OS's.

@OP - Not sure what causes plugins to stop working. But I've had the same experience as you are having. Have to cut some of them loose. Glad you found the problem!
