How to get this particular snare sound?
Can someone help me figure out how to achieve a particular snare sound? The sound I'm looking for can be found on this video ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_xjl0J0xv0) starting around 0:20. The snare in the above video consists of clap sounds layered with a snare hit. This snare hit sounds almost like hitting the bottom of a plastic bucket with a wooden stick. I don't know how to describe it other than that. Can anyone help me figure out what this snare hit sound is? I can get the claps to sound correctly, but I can't get that snare hit that the claps are layered over. Thanks!

You might have better chance in the "techniques" forum. To me, it could be any of these: a) not a snare at all but something else that was sampled b) a sampled snare that is tuned way up c) an electronic snare from an 808 or some other "iconic" electronic drum set There's also some tweaking going on (reverb, delay, etc.). That I can't quite figure out without sitting in front of my DAW.

Doesn't sound like a snare to me either. Whatever it is sounds heavily EQ'd or filtered

Closest thing would probably be a snare that was tuned up pretty high with a fairly well-damped top head. A snare like the following without the reverb and a with little high-end taken off would probably sound similar to what you want: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsdy_rct6uo&ob=av2e

I do think it is a sample of a snare. The sample is played back with a higher ptich, more than an octave higher. I bet that if you'd playback your video with a much lower pitch, you'd hear whatsample was being used. The drums sound like something you'd make with ReDrum in Reason.

To me, it sounds like a hand clap and a cowbell, or a hand clap and woodblock, or all three. The hand clap also sounds like it's multiple claps with very small differences in time and pitch.

I will also try woodblock if cowbell doesnt work. And if not, I'll just twist and mess with snare samples and hope I get something close...

Update: it's actually a woodblock. I pulled up my SampleTank and went to their woodblock samples, and without any effects it almost sonuds identical. Thanks for all your help guys!

The snare and hats on this track sound a lot like the old Roland TR-606 drum machine. If you do a Google search, you can easily find these samples for free (legally ) (note: the Kick and tom sound NOTHING like the TR-606, just the snare and hats do) That said - it does sound like the snare is also layered with Hand Claps and yes - I can hear a cowbell there as well.

I'd say the sound that comes in at 0.20 is based around a handclap. At least, I can tweak something similar out of my Machinedrum without too much difficulty (not exactly the same, but not too far away either and given time I think I could get very close indeed) using a clap sound. Exactly how I've done it would only make sense on another Machinedrum (as nothing else has the same percussion synthesizers), but try starting with a metallic "flamming" clap sound and band-pass filtering it with a wide band and a fair amount of Q but not enough to cause filter resonance (the Machinedrum uses a low pass/high pass combination to set up a bandpass). Then add an eq boost where sounds appropriate. Then modulate both the number of claps and the delay/gap between them - not too much and not too fast. Maybe modulate the filter a bit as well to add more variety. Then tweak and add delay/reverb to taste.

It sounds like two sets of handclaps and a cowbell.
