Triggering drumtracks in Sonar X1?
Hi, friends. I have to mix three songs for a band of friends, but the original kickdrum and snare tracks sounds really awful, and I mean awful! I think that I will trigger the original impulses of the tracks, but I don't how I can do this in Sonar X1 because I am totally new to these kind of operations (I produce electronic music just for myself): anyone knows ? Sorry for the bad english.

If you mean you want to use the recorded drum tracks to trigger other drum sounds, that's not something that X1 can really do easily. the easiest way to replace drum hits from a recorded piece would be to use a drum replacement program like Drumagog or Toontrack's Drumtracker. even then, if the drums are recorded as a stereo output file, your likelyhood of getting a good replacement is low. another option, however, is just to not use the recorded drums you have and use Session Drummer 3 and create a new drum part for the projects. Session Drummer 3 you would create the new drum tracks by audtitioning MIDI groove clips in the Session Drummer 3 interface and then clicking and dragging the ones you like onto a MIDI track. the output of that MIDI track will need to be set up to Session drummer 3. here are some tutorials on how to use Session Drummer 3 http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=session+drummer+3&oq=session+drummer+3&aq=f&aqi=g9g-m1&aql=&gs_nf=1&gs_l=youtube.3..0l9j0i5.1094.4704.0.4860.17.13.0.0.0.0.391.1720.0j3j1j3.7.0.

that just gets the transients, tho, right? if he has a stereo drum track that might get him the maybe snare and kick, but he'd still have to build the rest of the kit from MIDI grooves or by recording/mouse entering his own hits.

Are these drums multi-tracked? If so, The Audiosnap (transient) method will work for the kick, snare and toms ( if their miced seperately). Slate Digital Trigger is awesome for this as well. Nothing is going to help with the overheads if the problem is bad sounding drums but you can EQ out the meat of the kick and snare. Good Luck!! Rocky

Beagle that just gets the transients, tho, right? if he has a stereo drum track that might get him the maybe snare and kick, but he'd still have to build the rest of the kit from MIDI grooves or by recording/mouse entering his own hits. I did this entire track with 3 mics (1 Kick, 1 between the snare and the 1st tom, 1 between 2nd tom and floor tom) This gets good signals at different strengths that are easily identifiable in track view. Ideally if you throw out enough mics, you can eliminate alot of time enabling/disabling transients prior to converting to Midi My actual thought on the number of mics doesnt matter to much to me being the average song is only 3-4 minutes and to go in and work the transients doesnt take long at all. Sorry the video was poor in content but I had to run and only had a few minute (as usual) to squeeze out the info. As for the transients, the Kick drum is simple cause it only has minimal bleed and transients need very little help. As far snare, toms and hihats I have came up with a fairly simple solution for myself. Basically if I want the hihats and cymbals, I use the EQ to get the stuff I dont want out of the track, zoom in on track view with the transients assigning everything to the Hihat or Ride Notes where most of it occurs, which only leaves minimal transients that need shifted to a crash or splash and disable what I dont want in there. ( I use the drag and select thing here to get multiple transients at once ) You get fast once you learn which hits have what shapes and you always have the sound on to make sure you got the right ones. To confusing to try and describe in writing for me

digi2ns Check out the Cakewalk University videos on Audio Snap\ Basically- Click on the Kick drum Audio track hit "A" and adjust the Transient strengths Select Copy as MIDI icon Insert a Session Drummer 3 soft synth Track Paste you MIDI Open up SD3 and assign the kick drum note Ideally this is how it would work, however, when I have tried to do this I found that the audio snap transient placement accuracy made audio snap virtually useless without manually touching EVERY SINGLE marker and putting it where it should really be. Since this is the case I found it easier just to have some samples loaded in the browser and copy and paste where I wanted a sample to go. Using the audio snap copy to midi ALWAYS made every drum hit a flam because it was so inaccurate. I really hope that Cakewalk works the bugs out on it because it would be a great tool to make editing much faster. Until then I'd suggest just to do it the old school way and paste your sample in or get a separate program like Slate Tirgger or Drumagog.
