What the heck is Spotify?

I've been asked to use Spotify so I can preview some stuff a band wants me to listen too before we record.

I'm resistant to the idea of installing an app... It seems like Grooveshark, but with a bunch of strings attached.

Does anyone have some idea what sort of stuff I'll have to put up with after I install Spotify?

Thanks.

best regards,
mike

My daughter turned me on to Spotify when I asked to borrow one of her CD's to rip to my computer so I could listen to a certain band's style.

She suggested Spotify. They have a huge database of music from just about every artist imaginable and it streams instantly to your computer or mobile device.

It's actually pretty cool.   I use Youtube quite a bit when I need to reference a certain artist's style for a writing project, but now spotify also works well for the same purposes.

I have not tried it on my phone, but I need to. I have used Pandora on the phone but Pandora doesn't allow specific songs by name. Pandora is like listening to a radio station in a genre.

As far as fall out from registering.... I've not seen anything. They are not spamming me. I don't even recall any emails other than the standard  thanks for registering, hope you enjoy it, sort of thing.

I've given up punishing mine Jon.

After years of abuse, it finally dawned on me that it was coping with everything I threw at it, so I gave up.

So, I figured out that

1) Spotify requires a Facebook account.

2) It's unlimited is free for 6 months... then it's not free.

3) You need to give them your credit card or paypal info even though it's "free".   I think I was mistaken about this.

I've used spotify free for quite some time. The free version plays adds between every few songs. The paid version is add-free. I've never had to give them a credit card number.

Ok, I'll amend mine too.

Canceled my Facebook account a few months back.
Found it useless and boring. (Just my opinion).

Happy with Pandora and my iPod that has like 8000 songs on it so far.

I still enjoy flipping through YouTube and discovering new and interesting bands/tunes.

Still, thanks for the heads up Mike.

Re:What the heck is Spotify? 2012/04/26 15:53:40 (permalink)
Hey Mike....  I LOVE Spotify.  I pay the $10 a month for premium, which allows me to listen offline to playlists on my phone and a couple other things that I can't think of off the top of my head... But, I feel good about paying for it, and I haven't bought a single thing on iTunes since I started.  Not one.

I can't say enough good things about it.   The library is ridiculously huge, and I've very rarely NOT found what I'm looking for-- even old, obscure things seem to be there.

My European friends have been using it for years, and I was thrilled when I could join in the sharing.  I don't think you HAVE to be on Facebook, though.  I have mine connected, but I don't post to fb.
You basically have an app on your phone, and also can manage from your PC/Mac.  The phone app is more streamlined, of course, and the desktop version more robust.

AND your iTunes (including playlists) can be imported to Spotify.  You can listen to anything you own or stream all in one app.
Here's a link to the comparison chart... Premium v/s Unlimited v/s Free ($9.99/$4.99/Free)

Re:What the heck is Spotify? 2012/04/26 16:51:56 (permalink)
Uch... I despise Spotify; my opinion only though.

Great technology and definitely the way of the future.

Facebook integration keeps me from both Facebook and Spotify - I hate seeing what other people are listening too on Facebook and I want my own music listening to be private. I don't need people to be "looking into my living room" when I don't want them to. Yes, it can be switched off but bah. I'm net-paranoid too. so this is largely my own preference. f something connects to Facebook then I won't use it, even if it's "swithced off" like Mark Zuckerberg like's to call it

Also, their business model is screwed. I have music on Spotify and they pay next to nothing to the artist while scooping in millions annually to their own pockets. I HATE them!! Compared to other streaming services what they do is a joke! I see it on the quarterly reports so I know this for a fact...

However, as a streaming service it's among the best out there. I'm just boycoting them for now because they are, IMHO, members of the scum-of-the-earth aliance.

Rant over.

Back to business!!

He he, don't worry Julibee. I figure if no one use it no one will improve it either so don't feel bad. It's paying but not much. After 100K spins on spotify for example, we haven't even made enough to get the morning newspaper. I suppose it's different if you're a huge name...

So my next band will be called Lady Gaga
