Adding a filter to several tracks in a mix?

Hi,
First of all, hello! This is my first post in 4 and a half years, I took a break for a while and now I've managed to cobble some new gear together to start writing again.

My question may be easy to answer but up until I got this new computer I only ever used Sonar to create loops which were then bounced down to audio and arranged in Sony Acid. It was the best way of creating a whole track with a low specc'd computer. However, I can now arrange a whole mix in Sonar with all my soft synths etc but because this method is all new there's a couple of things I'm not sure about.

If I create a track and half way through (in the breakdown for example), I want to add a high pass filter to filter out the lower frequencies as it builds before the everything kicks back in, what is the best way of doing this? Do I have to create a Buss and add sends to it from each individual track I want to filter? There must be an easier way to do this surely.

Any help appreciated!

Every track and bus already has an eq.  You could set you high pass filter and turn the EQ on/off through automation, or simply have it on and add automation to the hp filter - both at the appropriate spot(s).

But if you are effecting a bunch of tracks, the easiest method would be to bus each track you want to hp to the same bus and do one automation on it.  Voilía, every track is hp'ed at once.  You then route that "sub" bus to the master.  If you have questions about bussing it would be best too look it up.  The difference between "sends" and buses is usually you send only a percentage of the choosen track to a bus - tapping off the signal for reverb or some time effect.  If you bus a signal to a bus, the whole damn thing goes through it.

You will need to find an EQ/Filter that can be adjusted with smooth sound (i.e. no jumps, skips, or "zipper" sound.

This can be automated in "real-time" by choosing to Write Enable a track hitting play, and adjusting the EQ as you move through the song. It can also be automated by adding an automation envelope for the EQ filter and drawing or editing the envelope.

If you're using X1 you can do this with the Pro Channel EQ. Otherwise I would try it with your favorite filter plugin and make sure you don't get jumps or skips when adjusting the filter's frequency.

    Peace,

Thanks for the replies. So, just to make it clear. If I want to use my own filter (fabfilter micro for example), I would add a bus with the filter on it and route every track I want to be affected, directly to that bus. I would then route that bus to the master? That makes sense. Would I have to select them all manually and output them to the bus individually or is it possible to select say 10 tracks at once and change all the outputs to the filter bus at the same time. (Just to try and save time!).

(X1 is very different to Sonar 6 which is the last version I bought and I'm still trying to get my head around it!)

EQ filters are best when inserted on the track level, not a bus. Insert the EQ in every track effect box. Busing it will not eq the whole track unless its pre fader. but then you lose all control of your faders for volume control. Insert The Eq on the track.

And...  You could also split the clips wherever you choose and insert efx (ie -filter) per clip. I personally like the automated approach mentioned earlier. But I sometime use the clip efx option.

When you say "bussing it will not eq the whole track" what do you mean? Why does it not eq the whole track? I'm getting a bit confused!

If I do what you suggest and do without a a bus and just filtered the individual tracks with eq's, is this not a whole lot of work for a achieving a simple task? I mean by having to set up each eq and write automation lines for say 20 tracks plus it would probably increase cpu useage surely with all these eq's?

Sorry, it's just I want to get this right and i thought the bus option would probably be the way to go but I'm prepared to be convinced otherwise!

I am not agreeing with CJay either.

There is more control per track if eq is on the track, but if there is an EQ on the buss, and the tracks are all routed to that track, of course the eq will filter everything coming in.

I think the key is to output (not use sends) the designated tracks to the "filter" bus track then output the filter bus to the Master. Could be where CJ was coming from.

I prefer using the high & low cut EQs as filters on the bus as well. Now if I could only get the ProChannel to save the remote control settings.
