The competition is noticing the Pro Channel

Looks like the competition is noticing Pro Channel. Look what I just saw as an ad from Avid...

Too bad that even though I have Pro Tools 9 it would cost me $299!!!!!!! to upgrade to PT 10 and take advantage of this. No thanks Avid.

It used to be that upgrades were more like $75-$99. Now that they divorced Pro Tools LE level software from their own hardware with PT 9 they seem inclined to pretend they should be able to charge more. Nevermind that just about every other DAW out there has been sold without compelling folks to buy hardware only from the DAW company, and these other companies charge $99 or less for upgrades.

This is even more of a joke since most of the updated functionality for non-HD users  between PT 9 and PT 10 centered around features other DAW software has had for years. (Clip Gain or 32-bit audio files anyone?)

I like a lot of things about Pro Tools software and do use it a fair amount when working with other folks that work in Pro Tools, but this kind of stuff is ridiculous. One more reason I prefer Sonar.

Peace,

Tunes

think ya reading too much into it... soft tube is making their tech. available to many companies for a fee , thats all.. :)

have a look in the "about" box in many programs and you'll see what's used from other companies.

Good context, guys, thanks for the critique.

Obviously this isn't a complete response to the Pro Channel, as Cakewalk introduced a completely new functionality there rather than leveraging their existing plugin architecture as PT did, and I think the way Cakewalk implemented this new functionality is very useful.
I guess I saw the fact that Avid was giving away the Softube Saturation Knob as a promotion to try to get people to A) upgrade to PT 10 from earlier versions of Pro Tools and B) lessen the impact of some of the differentiators folks mention when they give reasons why they use other DAW software. (We have that for free, too.)

    Peace,

Didn't I read somewhere that AAX is the pathway for PT to (finally) go 64bit?

What I found most interesting is the fact that the softtube saturation plug is not tied to ilock. Same thing with the Sonar version. It's a gateway plug. They give you a little taste to get you hooked, and out comes the ilock if you want more. :)
