Studio furniture?
Slightly OT I guess? My butt is killing me... I have like a hard wooden kitchen chair in my studio? And sometimes I spend hours at a time on that thing. Can anyone recommend anything specific? I could go to office depot and just have a look see I guess. Just wondering if anyone is pampering their buns with anything they'd recommend. Thanks.

A pillow on the hard wooden kitchen chair or a couple of pillows depending on the thickness. Why? Because it does not tilt and does not move like the expensive chair I bought, and to use a typewriter chair instead of the more plush office chair did not seem correct either. Not for me.

mattplaysguitar Stop trolling. Seriously. Why are you so agressive? Seriously... People have studios? They sit at them for hours? At least I do? Go harass someone else please? Why is it "some people" can only feel better about themselves when they are belittling others? And they're usually pretty tough when they hide behind their keyboards ;-) I guess there are many books written on the subject... I'm sorry you have anger issues. I need something in there, maybe a simple cushin would do. I know some folks have very nice adjustible chairs? But I record in it, so it would need to be silent for tracking acoustic guitars. I know most people just sit and mix/master/engineer and actual acoustic recording is probably a very small percentage. So maybe a nice swival comfy chair would be good for 95% of studio time. I can't help but think it would make a huge difference.

I have a padded fairly comfortable chair. I got if from a customer who has an office filled with these kind of chairs for their employees who set at desks all day long. This one was in a junk room because it was broken. the back rest was defective. I asked if I could have it. I removed the back rest and it is now a padded stool. It has pneumatic shock/height adjustment and rotates 360 degrees plus it has 5 legs for stability and carpet friendly rollers on each leg. Very comfortable to work from.

One problem with an office chair - that a plain wooden kitchen chair solves - is that it rolls, tilts and swivels, making it difficult to consistently listen in the same location. Moving your chair just an inch changes your spectral perception.

"bitflipper" Moving your chair just an inch changes your spectral perception. I certainly would not want to tie myself down to avoid moving around if 1 inch was all it took. If that was the case, I would definitely look at how to increase the size of the sweet spot so that I can move my weight from the left cheek to the right cheek once in a while..., at least.

I have an Aeron for my office, but I recommend getting one without armrests. But frankly, i'd also like a height adjustable drummer's stool. I have too many instruments at odd heights.

For me, almost everything is armless (I play guitar ), but I do have a small selection that suits most needs. I like bar stools for the height, and foot rests. I have 2 wooden (fixed) stools, and 2 soft/padded stools. I also have an adjustable drum stool that is incredibly comfortable. I usually use this for Pedal Steel and Dobro. For mixing, I have a padded office chair with arms, but is height adjustable. I have to respectfully disagree with bitflipper on this one. I like to have the wheels and height adjustment so I can hear things from many different perspectives without getting up. Maybe I'm just lazy!

I agree with everything everybody has written. BF is correct if the sweet spot is identifiable. My room is too small, too varied, and too annoying to not have a wheeled chair. No arms? Great idea. Wish I had a chair that could become armless. Why are the builders of these things so stupid, as to not provide such flexibility? Buss seats? Airplane seats? IMAX seats? Who fits any of these? Who are the idiots who design them? What sorta brain damage occured to the packleds who buy them?

I've got a Herman Miller Aeron and a Herman Miller Equa - both are excellent chairs. The nice thing about the Aeron is that the arms swivel and adjust in height. You can put them down very low so they're almost totally out of the way. You can also lock in the position anywhere you want to prevent rocking. The big thing now in offices is adjustable height workstations. Staying in one position for hours at a time is not very good for the body - the back, blood circulation, etc. I haven't seen this in any music studios yet, but some of these adjustable height workstations could easily handle some close monitors so that you could maintain speaker to ear position. Someday I'm going to install one of these in my house so that if I'm recording guitar, I can stand up instead of sitting in a chair.

I sometimes use a kneeling chair. In case you're wondering what a kneeling chair is, it looks something like this: Otherwise I use a standard office chair, one without armrests.

As far as arms go, I diligently searched high and low for an "office chair" with removable arms. So, the right arm is gone and the left remains. It's all good for guitaring..

Need a vibrating cushion which they sell (all seem to have heat also if needed). Get a massage and circulating going.

I spend more of my time at my writing computer - like right now. I find a short stool works well. I'd love an aeron, but the stool works well. Keeps your back straight. I don't sit for hours at a time - it is very easy to get up for coffee etc., but it is pretty simple to throw a cusion on it for buttache. @

Just picked up a vibrating massaging chair cushion. 3 zones, thigh, lower back, uppper back, all or none or one or two or three, and heat if needed. Works great and got it at a drug store in the local area, not expensive either.

spacealf The chair cushion massager will also work in my vehicle while driving down the highway. I have one but don't use it ... the cords or something made it difficult. I have a guitar chair and drummer chair ... also a leather couch. My office chair is latticed ... not too bad on the back ... nor too hot. I swivel and can play the fantom x on my left side or sing while sitting. (Note when I sing while sitting, I oft remember to throw a coat or something over the keyboard to prevent early reflections since the mic hangs over the keyboard.

I use two different chairs in the studio One at the desk is a adjustable padded office chair with arms super comfy for long hours. For playing I use padded bar stools no arms. increased height is nice for playing. I work from the studio so the office chair my butt is in for 9 hours a day got to stay comfy Tim

Ok, you guys have given me a strong imperaitive to fix the hard wooden kitchen chair I currently use... My problem is my pitbull mentality in the studio. I will hang on... And in the end? When I do get up? Well, it can't be good for you in the long run? Next check for sure, something nice for the tusshy :-) Glad to hear that others like to pamper their postierors as well!
