Yeah he's still a good player......... Still an arse-hole too tho. And in my opinion, any solo (except bass of course) that goes over 3 minutes, maybe 4 tops, is just too much. If I wanted to watch someone practice their technique I'd go to their house and save the $$ on the ticket. Mike

You know its SAD when I listen to Eddie's guitar solo and it reminds me of the guitar section at Guitar Center.

Even now, I still remember the day I first heard Eruption (my mate played the VH album in the 6th Form Common Room at school) and had one of those genuine and very rare music-related jaw-drop moments. Needless to say I purchased the LP asap and began a lifelong love of the music of Van Halen. Eddie may not be the fastest or the 'flashiest' out there (or even ever was), but he will always be seen by guitar players and rock enthusiasts as an innovator. And not that many earn that tag.

Ugly, ****, solo's are like a practice session.... Unbelievable. All for a guy that made more money and made rock guitar history when most are still learning how to tune - very few make it to that level and I'm glad he's still sharing his amazing talent. Thanks Anubis. I enjoyed that.

I have so much disdain for Eddie. My good friend Jon did sound for him twice. Once in their heyday. Once about five or six years ago when Eddie was REALLY messed up. Eddie fired Jon because he "could not make Eddie sound good". He was playing like sh!te according to Jon.

One thing I don't miss from the old days is self indulgent, wanking, solo's. This guy altered the course of rock guitar for generation to come and he's still working on solo's from 30 years ago. I may have to re-think that Aerosmith concert this summer.

Innovator is definitely the word for Eddie Van Halen. After Van Halen, we had decades of people trying to catch up or attempting to imitate his style in one way or another, most never succeeding at that level of originality. As has been said, many were faster, more technical, more extreme, but very few can truly say they changed the face of guitar playing for generations to come. I was never a rabid Van Halen (as a band) fan - I did own almost every album up until the Sammy days and they did get their fair share of play time (I was much more of an Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest type guy), but I am going to see them in July just to see Eddie play. From what I've seen on YouTube from this tour, it will be well worth it.

Eruption was a monument, a milestone in the history of electric guitar and rock music. I remember how many people were saying that he was using all sort of electronic gimmicks and studio tricks - for many, it seemed unconceivable that you could play guitar like that and sound like he did. Though the actual solo in the vid makes one think that it isn't as relevant today as it was once (me included) I wouldn' hold it against EVH to now resort to just keep doing the EVH thing. That's obviously what a large number of people want - the reunion w/ Roth shows that. I wouldn't expect them to re-invent themselves at this point, They're just no longer mean young tigers anymore. I don't have any interest in them, but that first record will always have a very distinct place in my collection, though by the time I started playing guitar, I was more of a Randy Rhoads fan. But VH1 kick started the whole thing.

"Give them what they want". On the 1984 tour, Eddie picked a friend of mine's band to open for them. They were a rockabilly/rock band called The Velcros. He told me after that tour that he would go to the soundchecks early and listen to Eddie play. To this day, he swears that we haven't heard how great this guy was. He said EVH would do stuff with just Alex that was so much better than what they recorded. There are a couple of Youtube videos around that he showed me that were close to what he heard. It's just EVH in the studio by himself. The guy was groundbreaking for about 8 years straight. Did he waste some talent? Probably. But there is a long list of musicians who've done that over the years. Side note: My friends band got absolutely killed every night. He's got a gorgeous Gretsch that's just dinged to hell from people throwing quarters at him every night. The night I saw them, they walked off stage after 3 songs. They were drenched from soft drinks getting tossed at them. Randy

It pretty obvious that the band Van Halen had problems getting their sound-music-brand carried through to completion. All the breakups and reforming with new lead vocalists. I'd have to attribute it to trying to go to far to fast. Whether it was album deadlines and label politics, equipment and technical problems, personality conflicts, or all three. Which was probably the case. But at any rate, Eddie Van Halen and his band set a mark in rock music few ever have or will. When you're a top act signed with a label, oft times you don't get ten years to put it all together. Technology has changed, music has changed, personally I hope the wall of amps is a front and he's playing through a miced lunchbox tube amp through the biggest guitar synth on the planet.
