Recording with Vista 32 bit??? Tascam us1641

I've never really played with Vista I jumped Xp to W7.
I am recording a choir concert tomorrow night, and wish to use 4 tracks.
My Acer Laptop died last summer leaving me with nothing for remote recording.

So my daughter has given me her old Vista 32 bit Sony Vaio dual core 2 GIGS RAM. to use.
I spent about 4 hours today trying to get DPCLAT under the 1,000 mark. There were 71 processes running I got those down to 58.
The performance meter page shows the CPU hitting 100% some times and memory steady at 50%. The disk usage keeps spiking. This is with nothing running, other than these 58 so called processes.

SO my question is= Sonar seem to be stable running the 4 tracks in record but I have never seen this kind of background crap ever!! Should I trust it? IS there a secret to Vista? Or is this all Sony Bloatware. ( Don't buy a Sony Laptop)

How important is this steady yellow reading on DPCLAT. I'm used to it being green. At least there is no red now.  Bed time see you in the morning.

An absolute must for audio on a Vista machine is that you have Service Pack to for Vista installed.

I had a Vista license when it first came out and installed it just as SP 2 was released. I too had spikes that were unchangeable until I installed the update. It was like night and day. Having done that I found it to be every bit as good as WIN 7 is now.

Thanks Mike, It is Home Premium sevice pack 2. It is nagging for updates, but I disabled all the network connections.

But it's amazing how quickly one forgets past issues. As you'll hear me say in posts about interfaces, I now have no issues with my Tascam us1641 under Windows 7 64 bit. I forgot about this old issue I had with 32 BIT.

I got up this morning and resumed my quest for green. I had turned the Tascam off. So to my suprise when I fired up the laptop and opened DPCLAT meter it was sitting solid  green at 50us!
Perfect, something I did must have worked...wrong..
The minute I turned the Tascam on,  back it goes to yellow at 1000us???. It's a steady pattern of 2 bars of yellow then it desends down to 386us in a nice ramp cycling every 15 sec. ,  Weird.

I guess yellow is still OK for recording audio.

I had a us1641 for about 7 days. I had similar issues.  I knew the computers (1 xp desktop, 1 vista laptop)were fine because I had been using them with other hardware. I could never get this unit to record even 1 track for more than a minute.  I also have a friend who is experiencing the same thing with the US1641.  I sent mine back and got a the mackie blackbird, I can record 16 track simultaneously for hours with no issues, on the same computers as I attempted with the US1641.  So I am pretty sure the US1641 was the culprit. Have you gotten the unit to work properly on any machine?

Hi Tracey, Yes the amazing thing is how perfestly it runs under  W7 64 bit. I can only guess it must have something to do with the new drivers they had to write for 64 bit system. I'd be real curious to see if anyone had luck with 32 bit systems. I never had your problem and had recorded hours and hours of 12 track live. My problem was using VST's. But it was always on the edge as it would seem.
I begged my wife to let me use her office laptop A Lenovo Thinkpad i5.
I installed the Tascam 64 bit drivers.
I then ran DPCLAT meter. It was in the very low green /100us and I had not done a damn thing to the system.
    Wireless internet -on
Anti Virus MS Security E. - on
    Battery managment - on

The most amazing thing is now the us level does not change when you turn the Tascam on or off.
On the Vista 32 and under XP 32 bit bit it jusmped from 100us to 1000us?

Anyways, recorded non stop 4 tracks for 2 hours last night.
The CPU meter seems to stay at 2%.

Anyone shopping for a new laptop you should check out the Think Pads. 100% ready to rock and roll out of the box.
