Assigning MIDI Instruments to a soft synth
I upgraded recently from LE to X1 Studio. I have the PROTEUS X soft synt, which I insert in my projects as a VST plugin, and until now I assigned only MIDI channels from LE, leaving the patch empty and setting it in the PROTEUS panel. I read in the docs how to assign an instrument to a MIDI port, but I would know if I can assign it to a VST synth, so I can manage all the stuff within Sonar. Thanks Nicola Cassetta

Welcome to the forum. I'm pretty sure they're refering to actual instruments, like keyboard or drum machines, not software instruments.

Thanks Nicola Cassetta Have a look at this video and see if that helps. You should be able to change patches from X1 using the patch dropdown but I believe the patch list is generated by the VST as opposed to external gear where an INS file is used. Thwe video uses TTS-1 but the principle is the same.

I saw your video and did some tests, but I found different behaviours. Loading some virtual synths (TTS1, Pentagon) I get the correct patch names and banks in the MIDI track dropdown, while for others (Dimension LE, Rapture) I just get patch numbers 0-127 and no bank changing. So, (admitting obviously that I have the proper .ins file), I guess there isn't a general method for getting patch names directly in Sonar. Is this correct?

You have to import the ins file.

That is correct. TTS-1 follows a standard General MIDI patch/bank setup, which is predetermined, and Sonar has access to that list. You can load Instrument definitions for hardware synths, which also give Sonar access to a predetermined list of patches for that particular piece of hardware. However, softsynths must be set up from within the softsynth GUI. Generally speaking, patches can be randomly assigned form large libraries (particularly true with Proteus), and there is no patch/bank reference for Sonar to work with. You can change the name of your MIDI track to help identify which patch it is triggering. I realize that is not exactly what you are looking for, but it makes it easier to tell what you are working with.

As I understand it Dim Pro amongst others doesn't work like a regular synth regarding banks & channels. Softsynths sort out their own patch names. The ins files are for hardware only (as far as patch names are concerned).
