Vegas Two Times

Howdy.  This is a cool, loose, raunchy cover of a rocker from the Stereophonics.  It has a real "live in the studio" thing going on, and that was one of the toughest things to do as a bedroom hobbiest.

After relentless tweaking, I can't tell if the balance is right on the various elements, and of course the overall EQ is always in question.  Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

If this was mixed in your bedroom, you did a fine job.  I really like this tune.  It reminds me a little of King's X, who used to be popular about 15 years ago.  All the elements of the mix sounded natural and present except for the bass guitar.  It's there, but could stand to come up in volume by 3 - 5db.  Otherwise, very nice.

    All the best,

Thanks. I agree the low end is a little thin, but when i gave more kick, the kick sounded too sharp, too prominent, and with more bass guitar, too boomy.  That is probably more about the not so great sound of the bass than the mix itself, so maybe I'll revisit that.  Maybe just a  subtle low end shelf or something?

Anyway, thanks for giving it a listen

Maybe all you need is to use a high pass filter on the bass to remove the boominess.  It's hard to say without knowing your mix techniques, but this song is worth getting right.  You, also, might try raising the EQ of the upper mids to bring out the attack of the bass.  If you're using Pro Channel, it has some nice presets that can get you close, but if not, you can still get there.

I found it a bit boomy here. Otherwise pretty nice mix. I prefer more dynamics but that is just me.

I'm going back into the mix to mess with the bass tracks, and with the low end overall.  Wish me luck, and thanks for the advice.

Don't know the original, but you certainly did a good job with faking the live in the studio sound. Only listening on lappy but it sounds pretty good here - these speakers don't translate bass very well anyway, so I won't comment on that.
