How often do you export or convert your X1 files to mp3?
How often is this usually done? or do you save to the default .CWP or convert to .WAV file more often?

Depends on the situation. But I typically will export as a WAV and open it in Soundforge.. do the fades, etc. and save as an MP3 for things like SoundCloud. ; )

CWP files do not contain any audio. They only contain a pointer to the audio which is stored in a separate file. The CWP file is a proprietary format used only by Sonar projects. Don't confuse them with WAVs and MP3 which are standard audio file formats.

I don't do any MP3 exporting. I only export standard wav file. As previously noted if I want an MP3 I convert it with a separate program (I use my audio editor, Goldwave).

I do three things for every project. 1. From Sonar, I export to a .wav that matches the project settings and do not dither. If my project settings are 88.2kHz/32bit, I export to a .wav that is 88.2kHz/32bit. 2. I then import the 88.2kHz/32bit .wav in to Sound Forge 9.0 and create a 320K, Hi-Q, Stereo MP3. I do it this way so no dithering comes in to play and the MP3 is created from the best possible source. 3. From Sonar, I export to a CD ready .wav and use dithering. For example, if my project is 88.2khz/32bit, I export using Pow-r 3 or Triangular dithering to a 44.1khz/16bit .wav. I don't know if there is any kind of dithering going on behind the scenes when MP3's are made from a 24bit or higher source, but this is how I always do it and I've been very happy with the results. So far I've never had anyone say, "Oh man, what dithering did you use on this, it sounds like crap!" I just posted this in the songs forum a few days ago. It's a 320k, Hi-Q, Stereo, MP3 made from the 88.2kHz/32bit (no dither) master.

I will at some point always export to mp3 'cos one of my checks is playback on my mp3 player. After all that's where most music ends up nowadays, like it or not. I use the lame encoder configured to work from Sonar's export. I use mp3tag to handle those.

skylightron How often is this usually done? or do you save to the default .CWP or convert to .WAV file more often? "How often is this done"?? Your wording makes me think you're referring to something like backing up or something that is done repeatedly during the making of the project. You're expected to save as cwp every few minutes (pressing Ctrl+S or using Autosave), depending on how many changes you've done. Then you back up the days work when you've finished for the day . When the mix is done, or maybe after the mastering or "mastering", you export as wav and then convert that wav to an MP3, or you use SONARs MP3 converter. Often people then listen to those in different kinds of systems to be able to make final mastering decisions. It's good to have one full quality exported wav-file. There is no reason to save as MP3 or exported wav in the middle of the tracking/editing process. If I have misunderstood you question, ignore this.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

If i'm working on a collaboration project with a bunch of mates etc, we export parts of songs or rough mixes as mp3's to each other to use as guide tracks for whatever parts are to be done properly. The small file sizes make it a breeze to easily email our parts etc.

If the need arises for a compressed file I'll use MP3s then. As millzy said above or for collaboration, web use or iPods or something. I try to work pretty much with waves wherever I can. That's not to say that MP3s don't have their useful place; they clearly do.
