Session Drummer help please
Ya know when you right-click on a drum in the SD3 interface, like the snare, and you get load instrument unload instrument Note - 37 : Sidestk Note - 38 : Snare Note - 39 : HndClp Note - 40 : ElcSnr well, what's that about? Can we assign different sounds to those four items? Thanks very much for any help, Sam

yes you can,you can also load instruments from the sd3 files as well(there is 100+ different drums to choose from. you can also drag/drop wave samples in from other sounds.files. check out this video for a real session drummer three class. there will be a test later..kidding. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZiZjQAxjCw&feature=relmfu but this is my favorite, the one with seth explaining it all. its in 8.5 but all still apply

Right chuckebaby (I have a chuckybaby brother), I watched the video - thanks! But - when I load an instrument, it gets assigned to all four of the snare sounds. When I go to the Piano Roll View, in the drum map pane, and sample the snare sounds, they all sound like the one sound I loaded. Any ideas? Sam

I'm hesitant to suggest a solution as there are probably many more expert than me but I think the problem is that when you load a 'kit' into SD3 as a program on SD3 'drumkit' pane each kit on the SD3 list typically provides those 4 snare variations you refer to under the one snare channel. E.g. the snare will be triggered by up to 4 keys with one being the main snare and another being a rimshot on that snare or maybe a roll and so on, depending which kit you load. However, if you load an individual instrument into the snare channel, on the SD3 mixer pane, then that instrument only (the snare sound you load) will be triggered by all 4 assigned MIDI keys, as you have found. I think the only way round this is either (a) if your snare sounds are in a kit you like that isn't in the SD3 list already, add that kit to the SD programs list, and load the whole kit when you insert SD3, so you can use the snare sounds and then replace the rest of the kit with other instruments or (b) use 'spare' channels on the SD mixer pane to load variations on the snare hits as instruments. (Or maybe another instance of SD3). Apologies if I've just misunderstood your problem, if so ignore this.

Hey Combo - You understand and stated my problem perfectly. I've been looking for a kit that provides the sounds I want but no luck. No spare channels on the mixer either - nice thought though. I already do have a second instance of SD3 providing hand percussion, but stumbled on the potential multiple sound per piece hoping to eliminate that. I'll keep trying and maybe even try tech support. Thanks a lot for your input. Sam

So I talked with Cakewalk support and now understand that when an entire an entire kit is loaded, a "soundfont" file is loaded, which can have multiple sounds per drum. When you use "load instrument" from the right-click menu on a drum, a wav file is loaded, and that's the only sound the drum will now have. I took a quick look by googleing to see what's involved in making soundfont files I see some software would need to be purchased. I don't need it that bad. If anyone is familiar with making soundfont files and knows of a free or close to free way of doing it, I would be grateful to get some pointers or info. Sam

I don't really want to diss a Cakewalk product, but there are much better offerings out there than Session Drummer. Any of the current crop are worth a look, my own preference is for BFD2

I have some Roland VDrums that I used to use to trigger drum samples but the thing I use now is one called EZDrummer. AudioDeluxe has it for $49 at the moment and I am shocked how good it sounds and how easy it is to use.

BFD is like learning a whole new Daw to me,I just haven't had the time to get into it at all,I just find SSD4 EX[which only cost 47 AUD,as I had SSD3.5]so much easier, and yes the sounds are often pre processed, but theres an amazing amount of flexibility, for example the routing to different tracks in X1,from SSD is so easy, and you can have as many snares/kicks,as you want, and they all sound different, plus the room/overhead,have bleed amounts, all of which Ive been unable to find quickly with BFD.......one day maybe. It's pretty obvious[to me] that Slate, have taken the best features from all the drum synths, and combined it into a very easy to use,and understand interface, also the kit pieces load in seconds, whereas BFD,seems to take longer, and there actually doesn't seem to be as much variety,as even the EX version of SSD,I'm hoping I'll eventually discover the depth everyone says is in BFD,but every time I.ve tried,I end up going back to SSD. Regards Bob.
