Disposing of printers? Memory wipe?
I'm shuffling stuff around and retiring some old systems. One system was dedicated to running an old HP 6MP laser printer for the office. I want to dispose of the printer but want to be sure the memory is clean before I consider giving it away rather than destroying it. Is there any way to know if a small office priinter's memory has RIPs of your invoice and business info stored or is that just an issue with the big multi task office printers. Any ideas? Thanks. best, mike

Unless it has a HDD (big office multi-job printer) then it's memory will be wiped just by turning it off.

Thanks a bunch. I see I can throw this once $999 printer away and if I ever regret it I can get a sweet new/used for $35. The cool thing is that the toner has dropped in price... But my wireless laser has made it obsolete. Thanks again... I'll see if any thrift shops want it or ditch it at the collection center. best regards, mike

I don't think there is an on board storage memory on the printer. Some printers have card and usb ports. I would clear those. To be safe you could back over it with the car.

Job done.

Using a shotgun is much more satisfying. Watching the pieces fly through the air... priceless. I have a Xerox printer that will hit the trash heap next time it needs toner or a new roller. I can buy a new ink jet wireless printer/scanner/copier for much less then either the toner or the roller.

Anytime I want to print something, I e-mail it to myself, go down to the library, hop on their computer, get my e-mail and print it on their printer. They charge me ten cents per page. WAAAAY cheaper than buying a printer and ink every few months.

Not to mention the inconvenience of having to do it that way as opposed to hitting "PRINT" and 10 seconds later having it in your hand. The only way I would agree is if you only print one or two pages a year.

I live close to the library so it's not a real bad inconvience, and yes I only print out things maybe 3-6 times a year. Most ink cartridges would dry up on me for lack of use. So a $50 ink cartridge for 3-6 items ?? Not worth it to me.

Karyn it's memory will be wiped just by turning it off. That happens to me every night. I'm like a duck. Every days is a new day. I'm just trying to remember today if I have anything in my print queue.

Like this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zoIWhv5uDbc Lasers beat inkjets all over the place for B&W printing. I keep one for things I print out in black and white. Cost per cartridge: about 30.00, yield: well over 500 copies per cartridge and the cartridges don't dry up.
