Using Thinkpad T61 and Tascan US-1800 with good results

Just a snippet of my hardware in case people have questions. I'm using a Thinkpad T61p, windows 7 64bit w/ 4 GB RAM, and a Tascam US-1800 interface. I have Sonar X1d Studio installed. I am having no problems with this setup. In fact, it worked right out of the box - after installing Sonar and the Tascam drivers. No dropouts, records without clicks or pops, nice and clean. I record 6-8 tracks at a time (drums) and have no problems so far. If anyone has any questions regarding this type of setup I'll be happy to help where I can.

    I have an Ideapad with an i5 CPU and 8GB of RAM, with Win 7 64 bit.  I have Sonar X1 installed on it but only use it for "on site" recordings.  I can use either my Roland Octa-Capture or an MAudio Fastrack Ultra 8R - both have 8 analog input channels and both work well.  I don't do any mixdown, etc, just recording with the laptop; the projects are transferred to my desktop system and processed there, including mixdown.

    I love thinkpads. I currently have three T43s, one T500 and one W500. They're great for live use being built like tanks (although less so the newer Lenovo models) and are easily upgradeable. Would never use any other laptop!

    My daughter gave me her old Sony Vaio Loaded with Vista. I played with it for 3 hours tweaking etc and still DPCLAT in the yellow. Sooo I had to steal my wife's Think Pad to do this live recording (using the Tascam us1641.) Like you say out of the box ZERO tweaks. I could even leave the wireless card on but I didn't. DPCLAT meter was around 50ms NO tweaks. Now when someone asks for recommendations for a laptop I actually have one.

    I have the exact T61p laptop with the same specs and currently testing the Tascam 1800 interface from my friend's chorus for quartet recording, though using Audition 3 currently (have X1 studio on order) and so far no problems and I am enjoying testing this interface. Too bad I will have to return the 1800 once done testing though...I like the fact that it has 8 mic inputs and analog inputs.

    Hi overkiller and AVTechman,

    I like to find out about the Tascam 1800 more.
    1) For audio recording that requires monitoring, is there a direct monitoring option ?

    2) If vst effects are used for monitoring (such as guitar effects or a little reverb, say for vocal), what is the round trip latency ?

    3) How about running soft synt for recording ..such as Dimension Pro / Rapture / Z3Ta.. do you need to set a higher latency compared to audio only recording ?

    I would imagine the us1800 is pretty much the same as my us1641, I think they only made a few changes to it like more led meters. Fist it has a full easy to use monitoring set up ( unlike some others) you have a control for monitor that drivers your studio monitors. you have a control for your headphones and a blend control that balances between the computer and the input. The round trip latency is not great, I get 11 ms. But for the price point it is great for live multi track input. 8 xlr, split phantom power, front panel 1/4' for guitar/ bass, then 4 more on back and then SPDIF. THe XLR pres are very good too.
