Recording from a VSTi
Hi, I see in the manual that I have to have a MIDI track inserted along with the VSTi track. I recorded by arming both tracks at once. Is this correct?

No the audio track is for playback only in this case. The MIDI track is for recording the MIDI data coming in.

Thanks- Can you clarify whether I need to arm both the MIDI and The VSTi Engine track when recording? It played back but it was playing from both not the audio track which had nothing in it. I do not understand your answer. Also, do all three tracks need to be armed?

MIDI can come from a prerecorded source like a loop or live from a connected piano type keyboard. To bring this MIDI data to life you insert a VSTi which processes the MIDI data and outputs audio to a connected audio track. SONAR provides a simplifies Instrument track which is both the above tracks presented in a more simplistic presentation. The easiest way to set it all up is to right click on the fx bin of a MIDI track and select insert VSTi, select the instrument of choice which opens a dialog box where you select the number of audio outputs from a single mono , stereo or multiple outputs say for a drum VSTi where you might want as many as 16 audio tracks or more so that each drum instrument can have its own audio track. You can play your MIDI data back and record the audio output live or Bounce to track and it will be done after the fact for you. Of course you must have some existing MIDI sat for the VSTi to process. Check out the tutorials which are easily accessed through SONARs help file by pressing F1.

That is the old school way. The easiest way to do it now is to simply find the soft synth you want in the X1 browser under the instruments plugins section, and drag it into X1- When you get the prompt screen, you can choose first output track and first midi track, or it can be an instrument track which the 2 tracks combined into one. I like them separate as a lot of people do for various reasons. To record, you only arm the midi track, or if it is an instrument track, you arm that track as there is only one shown that way.

I figured the OP didn't seem to have a real grasp of the concepts of MIDI and Audio within SONAR so explaining the "old school" way allowed a little more background. I appreciate that X1 allows some significant shortcuts in how to get things done but it doesn't help folks problem solve when they're short o knowledge and experience.. As I didn't have the luxury of knowing what the OP did and didn't know, I took the long way. We have the advantage of many years of learning this stuff which I reckoned the OP hadn't.

Thanks . I'll try to comprehend. Tonight, before reading your reply I saw that I could record just the VSTi track which resulted in a tan block with a thin line in it. It did play back. I will open a new project and try the way you guys suggested.===== Oddly, I closed out the VSTi and the last sounds I was using still played from my keyboard. I pulled out the MIDI usb cables and then the keyboard played its program.

You may have experienced the MIDI that had been recorded into SONAR, on replay, playing your keyboard. By default I think SONAR transmits and receives MIDI on all channels ie 1-16 (OMNI). It is also possible that you have recorded the sudio generated by the VSTi you inserted. I can't emphasize strongly enough that you do the tutorials that are provided in SONAR. If nothing else they can provide a logical troubleshooting sequence for us to help you further, eg do the tutorial on inserting a VSTi and then if you encounter a problem we can all reference the same written material thereby enabling us to offer more specific direction.

Well, I have been into the manual to discover things I can't understand - like MIDI files which I have no previous experience with having used COOL EDIT 2.1 in the past. I really need a one on one session with some one who knows how to set all this up. ===== I really like your give a damn gizmo! ha

Must be really frustrating. You have my sympathy. Cool Edit Pro is/was an audio editor. SONAR on the other hand is a MIDI and audio production tool having its origins as a MIDI sequencer. MIDI is such a big thing to learn, especially from just a few posts in here. Have you looked at any of the Cakewalk TV sessions that show in quite some detail the rudimentary functioning of SONAR?

I am now at the TV shows. Finally. I called Tech and found out about checking 'instrument track' which combines MIDI with VST.
