Microphone?

Doesn't seem to be a Shure SM27 as someone suggested.

Yes, I missed the point of the video.

I think the point of the video was simply to show her studio and give a sample of what she can do with it. Everybody is allowed a little shameless self promotion once in awhile. I'm glad she made it, it demonstrates what I can do with my equipment as well. Plus we got to hear one of her songs that she apparently wrote, which ain't bad. She's probably proud of her accomplishements as well she should be. Not everybody can put together a sweet song like that. It sounds to me that she has mastered SonarX1. She has learned how to use it, gotten past any bugs and nuances that the program has, and ended up with a finished product.

Well done in my book !!

The microphone is an unbranded Chinese large diaphragm condenser. It was bought new and I think it cost about £50 including shipping. Her headphones are just a standard consumer pair.

Whatever she uses, it sounds good and honest.  Makes me think that maybe some of my productions are over produced.

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left...

That's fantastic !! I always thought that you didn't really need zillions of dollars in equipment to get a great sound, this video proves it !!

Her song would make a great backing track for commercials. I wish her lots of luck !!

It's actually one of a series I think, planned by Etcetera, computer music technology distributor here in the UK.  I've bought stuff from them in the past, including Sonar upgrades, and the videos are excellent for letting customers see what's possible.

I think Lizzie is far too self-effacing to make a self-promotional video so I suspect someone from Etcetera persuaded her to take part in the video: Etcetera and Lizzie are both based in East Lancashire.  Not that there's owt wrong with that!

I was gonna say that the video seemed to be a bit too polished and very well edited to be a simple home based production.

Re:Nice Young Lady's Video Tour of her Sonar X1 Based Home Studio! 2012/05/15 10:35:11 (permalink)
The video was my idea.

We have been experimenting with video for some time now.  In this case we wanted to demonstrate that you can get quite decent results in a home environment without a big investment in equipment.  We have observed that most of the Cakewalk videos use professional musicians and there is a great deal of emphasis on the technical aspects of the software.  We have also noticed that the quality of many YouTube videos is appallingly bad.

The vast majority of musicians play at home with no ambitions of public performance or commercial CD release. We know that many of our customers get a great deal of enjoyment from home recording even if the audience is limited to friends and family, or even just the cat.  We also know from analysis of the search terms used to find our website that there are many musicians who are interested in using Music Technology products at home, but are not sure where to start.

The video is really aimed at musicians who are not currently using computers to create, augment and record their music.  We posted it on this forum to "test the market" and get feedback.  YouTube statistics show that we have achieved a higher than average audience retention (more people watch it to the end than is normal for YouTube videos).  The comments here and on our YouTube site have been remarkably positive and we are much encouraged.

Lizzie didn't need to be persuaded to take part.  I just called her and she said "Yes"

The video was unscripted but she was asked a series of questions.  There were a few retakes as it takes a while to get comfortable doing "a piece to camera".  It took about half a day to shoot.  As regards the quality of the video - we just did what we would normally do with a camera, tripod and 2 flood lights.  We didn't spend much on kit.  The editing was done in the office with an inexpensive consumer video editing package.  Tim did the shoot and editing.

We are keen to find other UK based musicians who would be interested in featuring in a similar video.  We propose to keep the same format of brief interview followed by a performance of the track.  We would also like to feature musicians who use other products such as Band in a Box, Sonuus FL Studio (Fruityloops) etc. in conjunction with Sonar.

If you know anyone who might be interested, please get in touch.

Thanks for all of your comments.

These are a great idea Peter.  I look forward to some more videos in a similar vein, (and I also liked your 'Sonar/BIAB' video - you're a pretty good picker).  I may even volunteer if I can pluck up the courage!  The trouble is that Lizzie has set the bar for all round pleasantness and I'll just come over as an old curmudgeon!
NB:  You can see a gallery of pics of my studio in the 'My Stuff' link below in case you're interested...

Really good vid,and it is a really pleasant, nicely mixed song,Good Job.

I skimmed through most  of the posts, but which brand/model "monitors" is Lizzie using?

I ask as, although I like my KRK G2 Rockit 5s,I'm starting to agree with some,that they're not very honest,hyping the lows,and the high mids are a bit harsh[?][even at low,low volume-mostly how I use them],so I'm wondering what other low budget 5"/6" or so brands/models,would go well,as a 2nd set,to use as a comparison/check?

I should search or start another thread, but I was just wondering, what the ones on her desk are?

Her set up is very similar to what I am aiming for. Minimalistic but effective. Seems like a very nice girl too. Reminds me of an ex of mine. Best of luck to her and thanks to OP for sharing.

Well because of Lizzie's video,  I have been inspired to 1)  clean up my studio so it's more presentable instead of a mancave, 2) I upgraded to X1 Producer to get the Session Drums 3, and  3) today I bought a used Ibanez Bass guitar I found at Sam Ash for laying down simple bass tracks.

These are all great improvements to my little home studio that I really needed, thank you Lizzie !!

See the bottom of the entry in the cakewalk blog.

It would appear the song is written by:

Written by Marcus Dandurand [Cakewalk]

http://blog.cakewalk.com/sonar-x1-easier-to-get-on-with-a-user-video/?utm_source=bronto&utm_medium=email&utm_term=SONAR+X1%3A+Easier+to+%E2%80%9Cget+on+with%E2%80%9D+%E2%80%93+A+user+video&utm_content=Save+an+extra+30%25+off+Cakewalk%27s+best+selling+SONAR+X1+extras+thru+May+31&utm_campaign=May+24+2012+-+X1+Expanded

I think you'll find that the blog entry - NOT the song - was written by Marcus.  You find a similar tag at the end of many posts.  For example:   http://blog.cakewalk.com/...final-links-and-video/

Marcus' name also appears at the top of the blog entry in small test.

Ah, yes. I stand corrected.

It took some looking to convince myself that Marcus didn't write the song as you had pointed out - BUT I couldn't accept that the sweet young lady in the clip was not the author of the song and would attempt to mislead us.

In the video it says that the song is original and was written and performed by Lizzie.
