Sonar X1d Exp and Reaper Rewire?

Hey there Folks,

I love Sonar but I love Reaper too. Both run extremely well on my PC but I have some questions about rewire and would really appreciate a little help from the kind souls here. Keep in mind although I've been recording on a PC for a couple of years there's still a lot of crap I don't understand.

1) Exactly what is rewire? I assume it's using another DAW or program inside Sonar or whatever the main software choice is?

2) Has anyone here done this with Reaper and Sonar? If so how's it working for you?

3) Are there any advantages other than hopefully being able to use features from my 2 favorite DAWS together?

I wish there was a way to combine the best of the best features of Sonar and Reaper. To me and for my needs that would be my ultimate DAW.

One main pet peave I have with Reaper is cleaning the current project directory. Sonar makes this fast and easy not to mention safe. That said there are features I love about Sonar as well as features I love in Reaper.

Sometimes it just plain old sucks to have so many good choices available.

Thanks in advance...

it allows you to run 2 progs at the same time side by side . where 1 is the slave and 1 is the master program, with reason.. it hooks onto the DAW e.g. sonar etc.. so when you hit play in sonar, it starts the other program.. but there is more, you can control midi etc. from sonar to the other program and take the audio in etc.

if you know about sympte from old days, it's a bit like that, it's a way of syncing things.

    can't speak for reaper..

but think of rewire like a bridge between the programs

Wow that was fast. Thanks for the speedy reply Fog. Very cool and kinda what I was thinking I guess. In the ballpark anyway.

So I can go to rewire in Sonar and select Reaper? Is it possible to use some of the features from Reaper (or whatever DAW) inside of Sonar? I know Reason comes up an awful lot with regards to this rewire thing. I don't have Reason though.

One app needs to be the master and one needs to be the slave. Sonar can only be the master so it can't be rewired into another DAW. Reason is AFAIK a ReWire slave only and can be rewired into Sonar but it can not be the master of another Rewire slave. AFAIK only Live has the ability to be both the slave and the master (not at the same time of course). I'm not that familiar with Reaper but check the documentation to se if it can be slaved through Rewire. However, it's impossible to Rewire Sonar into Reaper.

Your Rewire slave apps should be shown in the synth rack view in the browser if you click the big plus sign at the top. Then select the Rewire slave from the sub menu. You'll get an audio input into Sonar - or several - and some MIDI transfer in between if you'd like.

    I hope this help

try it.. see how it works.. or look on their forum , see what other users do..

people on here rewire reason... and ableton live amongst other things... errm think there is a few notation things that also run it..

not sure how it will work if you insert a rewire device in sonar with that.. give it a try , see how you get on.
