I'm grooving to Grooveshark.
It's all about the music. I listened to both of Shawn Lane's records yesterday. I hope to pick a theme for today and get it going before the coffee is ready. Peace out.

mike_mccue It's all about the music. I just finished an epic 10 minute Trance anthem. Peculiarly I think it is the best piece of work I've ever done. Sadly, I can't put it up because it wasn't my tune.

10 Minutes? Isn't that more like a nap than a trance?

It's worth knowing, I think, that Grooveshark are currently the subject of multiple lawsuits. They don't seek permission to put content up, and it seems they frequently also don't pay. They're also in trouble for telling the courts that their content is all put up by users, when internal emails have leaked showing that senior staff knowingly put up content they don't have the rights to. They're a bunch of crooks, basically.

I agree. But I like listening to new fresh music every morning... so I am enjoying it while it lasts. I think the most important factoid to share with peers is that Grooveshark spreads some of the culpability around by encouraging people to upload music. I wouldn't upload anything there that you don't have rights to... that's clearly illegal. I'm assuming that listening is just listening so I' enjoying it. :-) best regards, mike

Crooks in the music business? Good grief, what is the world coming to?

I wouldn't claim to have always been a saint in this area or anything, but I'm trying to avoid being a consumer of services that don't pay out to the creators. I've signed up for the paid Spotify service, as that is on the level (though there are disputes about the actual rates of payment). "Spreading the culpability around" isn't a big concern, really. Avoiding getting caught for piracy on the internet is plainly a piece of cake; doesn't make it right.

I find it to be a somewhat humorous situation, because the operation is based 2 hours south of me and they are getting lots of advertising business, and small business development help from people I cross paths with up here in the State Capital. It's a mish mash of unbridled optimism and seasoned cynicism realized as a contemporary intellectual rights quagmire. I don't know nothing. All I know is that it is supported by ads from government agencies and high profile multi national corporation brands and I am able to listen to what ever I want and I have never had to register or log in. I just hit play. What could be better?

I just find it ironic that nicking a guitar from the local store was considered the height of 'rock n' roll' at one point, now it seems that kids are happy to get parental consent to sign up for a subscription service. What happened to angst and revolt against authority? It seemed like fun at the time.

I have a slightly different take on Grooveshark. I've used it quite a few times to listen to albums as a way of helping me decide whether or not to buy the CD. It's better quality than the 20 second clips you get on Amazon and the like that I used to listen through for the same purpose (and a lot easier than trawling through YouTube), and you get a much better feel for whether you're going to like the 'real' thing.

Our digital distributor emailed us and said they were delivering to Grooveshark now so we thought we'd dump our modest catalogue there. But I guess they don't want it! nearly six months later they still haven't added us to their database and our distributor said - when we asked - that they had trouble complying to the rules for payment of royalties for streaming music so GS had chosen not to add anything more to their database. I suppose they have anough lawyers looking over their shoulders then But Mike, did you ever check out Spotify? And what about other less morally corrupt streaming services? I see it as a responsibillity as a musician and producer to only use services with clean sheets

Nicking a guitar from the local store has always been something only a complete wanker would do.

Now there's a completely 'rock n' roll' statement without incurring the upset of someone losing their property. Kewl... Now if you could only do it whilst keeping the language within the bounds of polite society.
