The making of Fleetwood Mac Rumours?
I saw it on Netflix last night. I think I enjoyed watching the making of Steely Dan's Aja and the Nirvana Nevermind records more. I saw the road tour for Rumours back "in the day"... it's funny, I just thought they were ok songs... finding out that the band thinks it was autobiographical and all about their personal relationships kinda lessened my interest. I think I liked it better when they we just ok songs. I did gain an even greater appreciation for John McVie's bass playing style. He and Mick were a great team. I also took the time to figure out that both were integral parts of the John Mayhall BLuesbreakers band, so now I realize I've enjoyed that rhythm section a whole bunch and didn't really know who it was. The guitarists get most of the press in that band :-). Good times.

When Nicks and Buckingham joined, the band really should have taken a new name. Rumours was a huge departure from the heavy, blues influenced band that featured Peter Green. Rumours was more a compilation of pop singles to me. It's a classic from that time period.

Hi, I imagine that a lot of the stuff that is here, was also in the "Behind the Music" thing ... which had some funny things, and some really screwed up things. I have never been a great fan of the FM that featured the queen **** at all ... she is not a singer that I care for or enjoy. I much prefer Christine, and her down home honesty, than I did the quasi-fake-makeup-ridden new age bs philosophy. Funny seeing this now ... I am putting together a "show" and it will have a lot of things, and one of the pieces that I have always loved is a song called "Dreams" on the Penguin album ... and this was the Bob Welch period. This is the band that I wanted to see, and saw, during their Bare Trees period ... still my favorite work of theirs. All in all, the Buckingham and Nicks thing may have made them a lot of money, but in the end ... I prefer to say ... so what? ... I don't think the music is that good, at all ... it's just pop music and yet another song for the radio that made them millions. I have a lot more care and respect for Christine as a person and artist and writer ... that will never get the credit she deserves! But what a fun story it is to read about ... in those days everyone slept with everyone else anyway ... so seeing that this happened and that also happened and Mick talks about having been in love with Stevie in his book, and come to rehearsal totally bombed and sexed out for it ... but there was nothing on the McVie's ... I guess they never saw each other? Or there simply was nothing to tell!

Hi, Nahhh ... I would rather enjoy Kate Bush, or the late Magdalena (sang and played violin and flute with Per Lindh and others in that country ... and my personal favorite voice and woman in all music ... the late Sandy Denny. I could also easily add the most seductive of all whimpers and sounds done by Shakti Yoni play Wild Child from her live album!) ... and she's woman enough to handle it! Which this queen will never be! Even the wonderful voice of Renata Tebaldi is more romantic to my ears than the Queen Beeeoch!

Hi, Mick's book, btw, is interesting, and more fun. There are a lot of notes and things about the early days with John Mayall, and what got him to leave John's band to make one with Peter Green. Next is stuff like tje late keyboard player in Camel, who was one of his closest friends but as their time was coming up, they never had a chance to play together. His affair with Stevie and them ripped senseless. Booze and more booze. The manager stealing the name and putting a band out on the road playing many concerts, and it was not FM at all ... and other fine stories. Apparently there were some folks that sued FM's management for the scab band, and guess where the lawsuit went to ... yep ... the wrong folks! It's not really salacious, but it is fun reading. But it does give you a good appreciation for his humor and personality all around. He's actually very with it, but in the end, even he admits ... that he is one of the survivors ... of the many drug and abuse thing.

The making of Fleetwood Mac Rumours? I've said it before and I'll say it again. This song always seems to give more of a clue to the Buckingham, Nicks duo than anything else. It's my very own rumour. But there seems to be an uncanny resemblence to the songwriting style and yet it came 10 years before that album. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PizUw4GmCUo

I watched this last weekend. That album was almost all Buckingham's work. Christine M. had a hand in a couple of songs, and wrote 1 by herself, but he did all the heavy lifting. Stevie can't write a song worth a damn. She doesn't understand phrasing and timing, so when she brought in lyrics or lyrics and melody, he would have to break it all down and toss out half the lyrics just to get it to make sense songwise and fit with the meter of the tune. Having said all that, the first Fleetwood Mac, and then the Rumours album are pop masterpieces. Those songs still hold up all these years later IMO. Randy

BTW, anyone watching the Fleetwood Mac stuff on BBC4 tonight? The documentary that's on now is repeated in the early hours if you want to record it, and "Peter Green - Man Of The People" is on in a few minutes (10 - 11.30).

Wasn't that the album where they took some ridiculous amount of time (like 3 months or something) to get the sound and record the drum tracks? Mike
