preloaded VST template ???? is it going to affect performance?

I'm trying to make an all purpose template file and maybe I shouldn't , but  I do a lot of auditioning of patches from synths when I'm trying to make a song.

So If I have a 16 track audio template and I have the first couple of tracks for my keyboard and vocal mic...

My question is if I have a pre-opened VST or DXi instrument and a corresponding midi track ready to arm for recording... or if I have a few pairs of matched Midi/Audio track pre-loaded.... are these going to affect the performance?

I suppose they're not going to speed things up in any case.

Another question... I bought several 1.5TB hard drives and I thought about storing samples on a different drive, or partitioning these big drives, but then I decided to just play with them simply  and have a backup clone in case my daw or one a hard drive quits while I'm working on it.

So the question is... Is there going to be more seek time for the system to gather the data from the running song if I have more stuff on the drive, or does it take the same seek time for the hard drive to find it if it has to look over empty hard drive space vs. data?

thanks for any input on this.

As an alternative, you might find it useful to create track templates rather than a project template.  A track template is a saved configuration of tracks, routing, softsynths and effects.  It can be added to a project at any stage, not just at the start.

thanks... I'll try it out..thanks a lot... I guess that means I can make a few of them and switch them out in stride as the project develops... I'll check that out thank you.

Well on the drive question, its usually not the presence of other stuff on a drive that will cause access time to increase, its fragmentation. So if these drives have been used for a long time and things have been added and deleted, there are likely to be open usable clusters all over the place. Writing a bunch of new huge sample files could easily fill in all your "gaps" before getting into virgin territory on the disk. On the other hand if you've mostly added things to these drives and seldom delete anything (why delete anything when you've got terra-bytes ;-), then maybe there will be no issues. But really, to be safe, it wouldn't hurt to partition some areas for just the samples, right?

Partitioning won't make a difference at all with regards sample streaming.

What will help is having separate physical drives for your OS & Progs, Cakewalk Project & Samples.

Use a 4th drive, external if necessary, as a backup drive

From what I understand window 7 looks after disk management -re-defraging etc. so is no longer an issue. Correct me if this is wrong. I find that having a dedicated DAW with 1000 Gigs that all you need is 2nd back up drive. I don't have sample library's so I guess a 3rd drive would be good if you did but I find it hard to fill 300 gigs these days.

Thanks very much for all the input...I think I'm going to just keep flying this thing simple... one drive and local disk samples since its 1.5 TB. I'll have a clone standby if a lightningstrike takes out .  And if I get serious performance bogging down, I'll reconfigure from there to seperate samples from the working disk.
I still need help with templates, but I'm going to make a new seperate thread about that . thanks
