I was actually seen in public...

...last night for the first time in a long time.  Even though I've for all intents and purposes quit "subbing" or playing out I helped out my best buds band (they are all very close friends) and did a high-dollar wedding job with them last night.  It was fun to find my ear still works and my playing is not as bad as I was afraid it would be.  Muscle memory, I guess.  It also reminded me why I don't do it anymore...even the though the "gig" was only a three hour stint it basically took up an entire afternoon of getting my gear ready, lugging it, loading in, sound checking, etc... so that actual time of job was more like 6 hours plus I had to get all gussied up in coat and tie (yeccccchh!).  Plus, today I feel like I've been run over by a truck.  But am I complaining??  Only half-heartedly...I made enough to buy a new pair of Equator Audio D5s which I just ordered.  Yum.  I'm starting to feel better already:-)

I'm torn between starting a gigging band or not for the very reasons you mention.  After a point you just get tired of feeling like you've been run over by a truck (or even a small car).  Glad you had a good time though.

You done good! I bet you had fun too. I look forward to your opinion of the monitors, they look nice and the reviews are certainly glowing.

Congrats... time and money well spent.

That's cool 'olpal, them posh wedding do's can make it worth ya while.

I'm starting to think that maybe I can put in the odd appearance now and then but I may be fooling myself by thinking that.  Last time I did it, it took a two-pronged intervention from my partner and brother to git me to the hospital after I worked my way through an oxygen bottle overnight.  That must have been 6 or 7 years ago now.

That particular band fired me because they'd already lost a drummer to a heart attack and they didn't want the death of his stand-in also on their hands and I was refusing to quit...

The mere fact that I'm thinking about doing some more though is big progress.

My kids were ganging up behind my back to get me a nice little replacement and suitably portable Gretsch kit for Christmas until I learned of their plans and foiled them by telling them I was no where near up to the task yet and told them to put their money back in their pockets.  Their gesture made me break down into a complete pile of mush at the time though I was in tears for several days when I found out what they were planning. (when I saw the kit they had lined up for me though I wished I'd have kept my big mouth shut... )

You get out there and rock on 'olpal...more power to you!

Here's the secret to avoiding Sunday-morning back pain. You show up at the hall in your rattiest bluejeans and Grateful Dead T-shirt and slink around the building peeking into windows. Before long, a smug relative of the bride will open the door and sneer "can I help you?".

I'm planning on my semi retirement being as close to full time playing as possible. It's been many years and miss it actually. After so many years piddling ITB I can't wait for real time playing again.

Oh there's no limit to my belief in my ability to still wow most any audience regardless of demographic...my ego is so big I have to open the door and let it proceed me into the room...but it takes both Aleve and Pepcid AND a stiff Bombay or Plymouth martini to make it happen.  But I'll work on it, ol pal...I'll work on it.

Reminds me of a load in at a posh country club...."musicians and dj's do not load in through the front door. Use the back door next to the garbage. Thank You"

Glad you had fun even though you are a trite tired today.

I have done mostly solo work and have seriously thought about getting with a few guys to make some music. Over the weekend I was invited to one of those big wedding parties and the band there really made it look fun. These guys rocked!

They started out the set with jazz and moved into big band after awhile and to my utter surprise went into covers. The drums are not in the pic here, but the guy playing guitar looked to be in his 60s and he could rock. These guys were all top shelf people. The pianist did what seemed inhuman and with no music to read....I kid you not. They could have cut an album that night. I didn't hear a single mistake in 6 hours time....and these were all mostly older guys. Just goes to show you the mojo don't go away....
