Vanessa Green
My daughter's guitar teacher came over the other day and we recorded a slow guitar + vocal tune of hers. I'm really looking for production critiques. I'm aware of the "sssshhhhhh" on the vocal and I'll turn the db down a tad next time on the vox input. She was looking for a Barney Kessel sound which was a bit difficult on her standard fender electric but this was what I came up with. Hope you enjoy it too. Vanessa Green ---> http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=831749 P.S. I tried to get her to sing the backups on Mark's Pretender cover we did (also on the board), but somehow I couldn't entice her enough to do it!! I needed to shmoooooooze her more, but I dunno how shmoozing works. Haha! Edit: Her pic is up there too. Isn't she so pretty???

Nice tune.... I like those off the wall preformances the guitar is too loud and has a mid bump that is booming & a bit and annoying. Pull the mids down a bit and roll the low end off ... this will clean it up considerably and let the guitar float in the back ground for the vocals to take center stage. the un-tuned vocals add a certain off the wall feel to this which works well in a quirky sort of way. They would never cut it on a full band production but a single guitar..... yeah, the vox work pretty good. I'd like to hear the vox better before rendering final verdict and that requires fixing the guitar EQ and level first. This is of course, just my humble opinion.

I like the simple arrangement of this old classic. I don't agree with GH - I like the tone and volume level of the guitar, and the vocal sits just right above the guitar. Both voice and guitar have a nice, organic tone which plays well on my monitors. I agree, though, that the vocal is a little quirky. The vibrato sometimes is a little heavy in places, and it wavers out of pitch a bit, but not so much as to be distracting. That's just my humble opinion.

A meloncolly rendition to be sure. Hard to give production advice on a guitar and vocal performance ;-) My production advice would be to add an orchestra! I enjoyed it though, and yes, she's pretty. She's no Dena Maynard... But she'll do.

I enjoyed that. Beautiful voice on a beautiful lady indeed. You can deal with the "ssss" with some filtering. Its not clipping so it is fixable. Vocals could be a bit louder. I was not distracted by the vibrato myself, it was natural and appropriate to me. Cheers Shad

Dena, I don't hear any real production issues. But the song is called Blue Skies (By Willie Nelson). Just asking why you call it a "Vanessa Green Original"?

Herb and Lynn, Two different critiques proves I always get contraindications! Haha! I do agree the guitar should be turned down in volume just a tad. But it sounded soooo good via iPhone!

Bapu, I don't know! I've got mental issues at 5:00 in the morning. I fixed it! We're working on more, some are originals and we are bringing in more singers too. So excited!

The ping-pong delay on the vocal is distracting on an exposed track like this. A simple dark plate reverb would sound better. This can be de-noised very easily at the mastering stage.

BAM! Did I read that right??? The ticket price on that izotope RX2 Advanced???? OMG! That was the first one I saw, but then the $349 looked a lot better. Did you post somewhere a sample of audio you've used it on?

Ok it's about the song and the interpretation is gorgeous, just really emotional. I got you coming through, which is what I want to hear when I listen to music. Ok I'm being lazy and listening to it through my TV speakers but I can judge mixes off the TV speakers, est if it sounds good on the TV speakers it sounds good on most things. 2 things, yes there was a little boom on the guitar, up to you if you want to fix it and 2nd the conversion from wav to whatever soundclick use as a compressed file is obvious, there are some digital artifacts. Are use converting before you upload??? But really sweet sounding job. Neb

No, I don't have advanced, the normal RX is really good, but yeah, it's like between 2.5 and 3 bills... But it will take your room noise? The fan on your DAW? and make them "go away..." But it doesn't impact the sound of your recording? I'm not sure how they do it? But it's pretty cool technology... I used it on my vocal tracks on my tune "49" on the forum. I recommend it. I had sent some vocal tracks to James (yoyo) and Tim (TIMIDI) and they commented that they could hear my noisy assed room in the vox? So I took care of that... I still have a noisy ass? But my room is now "silent..."

Hi Venus, I liked this a ton...especially the vocals. Really really nice and (more importantly) interesting vocals. There is a bit of boom in it...I'd put an EQ on the guitar and cut at 140hz with a fairly narrow Q by about 3.5 or 4 db and it should fix it. Good luck and thanks for posting that. Kinda made my night :) Dean

Loved this. Was compelled to listen again. The boomy E string (and A?) notes are something i sometimes suffer so good tips on that from Razorwit. Love the 'naked' vocal too. Like i say - compelling

I like it exactly as it is. I hear what others are saying, but I kind of like the honesty of it if that's the right word. Depends what you're aiming for I guess, but it has the feel of just plugged in / one take / job done which I like a lot.

You KNOW I love female vocals. This was just wonderful. I'd like to work with her sometime.
