Vocal Strip Automation

I am using the Vocal Strip in the FX Bin to add doubling to a vocal only during the bridge. If I were doing a traditional mix to tape or DAT, I would manually turn the Vocal Strip on and off at the appropriate moments.  How would I do this when bouncing down for a CD?  I tried automating this and it didn't work.

Of course, I can split the vocal track into pieces and apply the effect to the piece with the bridge, but I hope there is a more elegant solution than having bits and pieces of vocal tracks scattered about.

Thanks.

Works just fine following the img descriptions below.

    Open up the fx
    Arm for Writing
Automate the Global On/Off or the Doubler On/Off
Press play and record your actions then UnArm

Thanks, David.  I may be missing something.

    - I put the VocalStrip in the FX Bin.  Within the FX Bin, the doubler is on.
    - I hit the W (write) button in the track so it was Red (just like when doing fader automation)
    - I play the track and use the mouse to click the VocalStrip in the FX Bin off and on.  That is not recorded and when I play back the track, my on/off actions are not recorded.

I think I must be missing something.  Thanks.

You will need to have the voxfx window open - Click "Write" on the Fx Panel at the top/right. Then press play and click the buttons you want to automate directly within the effect window. I don't think we can automate bypass fx buttons or (On/Off) in the fx bin.

Edit -> Look closely at the 3 red boxes I put on the illustration. Start at the top right corner.

Or you could simply split the bridge into it's own clip and apply the VX64 as a clip based Effect

Thanks, guys.  I have learned something plus got a couple of workaround options.

As much as I would hate going back to tape, there are moments when I miss the real-time mixing experience and the ability to make a quick dub without a lot of hassle.  But, if I went back, I would be frustrated by the limitations.

I could swear I've used several on/off or bypass automations in sonar before. Are you sure it doesn't work?

I tried it - doesn't work that way here. You have to arm the plug and work inside of the plug's window to automate the controls on the fly. Or - you could go about it the other way and create an automation envelope, in this case for "plugin enable" and manually insert the automation points. Both ways work as advertised.

    @konradh
Glad you got this working! I hear you on the balance of missing the tape world and having the perks of digital recording software. Even though I had logic audio from the beginning to 5.53, I still stuck primarily with my 16 track fostex/smpte. Then again, computers were huffing and puffing to do a lot back then. So I would output to DAT and bring the mix into Soundforge/CoolEdit or logic to do some cleanup work. Come to think of it, I don't miss it that much.   :)

Thanks, everyone.  I was able to automate this within the effect itself instead of using the on/off switch in the FX bin.  This opens a world of possibilities for me, so I greatly appreciate the help.
