spacey

I have plenty of stories but something tells me to shut-up.

No way, spacey!  I'm digging all these bandhunting and gigging tales.  Please, do tell.

Well, it certainly isn't us Spacey!  I think we need a good thread for gig stories again.  Very entertaining stuff!

Ok TysonC and Craig...

I'll tell one of the earliest or is that oldest...
I was just hired to play with the high-school guys in the towns top rock band , I was 13 and
man the practices were tuff. Not that I didn't know the material- it was the girls..! I was like
a fun thing and didn't mind the attention at all and I was really a shy person....after all I spent
most all my free time trying to learn guitar...
Well our first gig after about a week in the garage practicing to the street kids was to be a private
party in the back-yard of the "high-class". I guess all the parents had been talking about the "kids"
rock band....anyway we set-up in the yard got ourselves cleaned up and powered everything up
and everything went NUTS. We about killed ourselves.....everything was on the grass and we
were cooked!
After all the grumps settled down they put rugs and stuff while we checked our teeth...then we
rocked the old farts all night long....excellent gig. I liked that old rock....good party stuff.

Thought a good experience to mention TysonC.....your young and deserve a chance to see what it's like to be......like me. LOL

LOL...I'm sorry....TysonC, uhhhhhh keep your feet on the ground and not only read warning
signs but understand them. If you don't understand be sure and ask. Nothing wrong with asking.
Is that better Craig?

So you're saying you nearly electrocuted your first group?

Might be a good question to ask any prospective band leaders you run into.

On a related and serious note, wherever you're going to play it's always a good idea to bring an outlet tester with you.  It only takes one outlet wired backward to kill people and more than one singer has found this out.  All you need to do is be touching something plugged into one outlet then touch something plugged into the other and *BLAM* it's lights out.

Here's what I'm talking about (they're cheap - get one from Home Depot, Lowes, etc.):

ME?!!  SEE....see how **** gets started?  It wasn't my group. I didn't do anything....but yes,
I felt like I was just about killed my first gig.

The best I remember when I touched my amp to power on and those other guys flipped the switch
on their mic's....the chatter started. I guarantee you it will rattle your teeth.

TysonC you can not rely on anybody. You can not put your trust in others thinking that they know.
It doesn't matter if they are older, more experience, rich....nothing...you must know your **** and
have your act together.

If you want to be a pro know your ****. Do not assume or think for a second that others have it
covered. YOU have it covered.
What do you know about contracts?
What do you know about....on and on. It's more than knowing the tune... a lot more.

If I learned anything in 1968 it was that I was about killed and EVERYBODY there was suppose
to have their **** together..I was a kid trusting all these older members and all the grumps..and it should not have happened.
We set up on a lawn with no insulation and not one person in hundreds gave it a thought...

Wow, Spacey.  That's insane.  Good advice, though.  I'll try to keep on learning so I can avoid this sort of thing (starting from zero here, but every bit of advice helps).

I'll do some research into setting up electronic equipment and testing the outlets in an area before plugging in gear.

I don't want to burn to death, get electrocuted, or have my ears ruptured...  I also don't want to get screwed over by shady deals.

There's so much to learn!

I haven't had any band stories happen to me in a long time.

I'm trying to get back into playing live though.  I answered an add on Craigslist posted by a singer/bass player wanting to form a gigging cover band.  He dropped by my house with a drummer he knew so we could all talk about the project.  We decided to head to the drummers house and jam so I loaded my gear in my vehicle and followed them to his place.

He lives on a heavily wooded lot on the edge of the city.  I pull up next to the other vehicle and the singer/bass player is opening the hood to his vehicle.  I walk over to see if he has vehicle problems, and before I can offer any help he tells me I need to open my hood and leave it open so we can go in.  Huh?  He said "yeah, open your hood, otherwise the goats will jump up on the hood.  They jump real high.  You don't want your hood all scratched up do you?"

I looked around and didn't see any wildlife so I figured this was some sort of compliance test or initiation.  Wanting to fit in I raised my hood and we went in and jammed.

Sure enough, as we went outside to leave, I had to make my way through a small herd of goats to load my gear back in the vehicle.

Great story, Mark.

Actually sound like that could have gone to a really weird place there for a second.

Glad things worked out!
