Splitting .wav files
Does anyone have a good way of splitting wav files prior to importing them into Sonar? I have wav files that contain multi-tracks for several songs that were tracked as one continuous song. I would like to split them up before importing them into projects. Thanks Rocky

You can also import into Sonar and then split/copy/paste or split/cut/paste into new projects. Brian

All the files are mono but continuous through several songs. Kick, Snare, Toms, Overheads, Bass, Guitars, Vocals, etc. I would like to (batch?) split them and seperate them into individual song folders. I"ll check out Audacity. Thanks for the reply. Rocky

Yes, this is a work for an audio editor. Wave lab, Adobe Audition, Sound Forge. Audacity is free!

why not just drag the whole file into sonar and split it with the split tool and drag the other sections to other tracks, then just highlight the one track you need to export and export it.,follow the same example for the next file. you can drag this one big file and cut it up and export the pieces one by one.to another foler...or the same folder, dont matter. the very tool your inquiring about is indeed sonar. not like the old days and your going to lose some quilty every time you export.(not like a tape deck mun !!) might even be able to do some pre production clean up before you export them, thus working with the flow. good luck

Just drag and drop the files into SONAR and use the it tool to split the tracks across your selections. Are they time stamped (Broadcast wav) so they will all line up?

I'm just trying to save rescources by not importing (copying) the same large audio files several times over for additional projects. I think I found a work around. If I create a project and import the audio files, I can then create the other projects via "save as". The additional projects should get stored in the original folder and use the same audio data. Is this a live recording? Because if it is, I strongly suggest leaving them all in the same project and work on them as though they are continuations of the same song That way you ensure continuity. Just a thought.

+1 on Audacity - I use it for quick edits/rough cuts whenever I don't feel like opening a project.
However, I agree with most people above as well - why not just drag the whole thing in and split it up inside Cakewalk? Then drag to tracks. You can clean them up and tweak them while in the same project for continuity, then always export the tracks for building a single project around each.
