Loop Recording vs. Multiple Takes Preferences
When recording multiple takes that you want to analyze later to find your best combination, I am wondering whether people generally use the loop recording, recording into separate tracks or into layers or record multiple takes by setting up an entirely new track each time. Maybe it's contingent on the scenario? I don't know. Maybe one method is easier to mix or work with later on? I don't know. What are your thoughts? Thanks, Jason

I use loop recording in conjunction with layers. Using separate tracks seems wasteful to me, and takes up far too much screen real estate.

Good point. Doesn't that, though, seem like a limitation of the software (how it's displayed) rather than a statement of how you may prefer to work? (sorry, I'm a software developer by trade and always looking at ways to improve my applications user experience)

No - I actually prefer to store all of my takes in a single track where I can easily, using the tools in Sonar, create the 'perfect' comp-ed track.

Yeah, there are some layers-specific ways of working that are really useful.

"Bristol_Jonesey" I use loop recording in conjunction with layers. Same here..., getting great results this way (specifically with my 12 string acoustic).

I would assume that this, in conjunction with punch recording is pretty powerful and a good way to get the best from your recordings?

Most definitely. I'm with the majority. I use layers if it's the same part and different tracks for completely different parts. Once I've got several takes I switch to my comping screenset (set up video here) and comp away. (Method video here)

+1 again to this. Anything in which I plan to comp I typically put on loop for the entire song, or relevant section and hit record and play/sing till I feel I have enough takes. Any problem areas I'll usually then just loop over that section and get some extra takes. Something to be careful with when singing, is often, without realising, you can change the way you sing over time. If you put the entire song on loop and sing it 6 times through, the first verse take 1 might have a completely different tonal quality to take 6. You don't realise you're doing it, but it just happens. This may be a result of not being an amazing singer, but something to keep in mind! You may work better looping the verse only, and singing that multiple times, then moving onto the next verse, then going back and doing the chorus etc. It may also be worth singing 1-2 takes, listening back to them before singing again, so you maintain the same sound if you tend to sway. Comping can be a **** when half the takes you sing sound soft and smooth, and the other half sound hard and grungy. I guess a rule there may be to learn your song better before you start singing :| But something to keep in mind!

One of the things that I have found out for myself is that I do only three or four takes. I have realized that if I do a bunch more, I spend more time looking for the best take than it is worth. I can usually nail it in three or four takes, or at least nail it good enough. Tom

I usually find my second or third take, or even first is where most of my comping choices are made. By the time I get down to fifth or sixth or beyond I've started running out of steam or worn my voice/fingers out. Doesn't stop me trying though.

Thank you all for the great advice! I just did my first ever recording and recorded 4 layers of the entire song. I'm going to start going through the process of evaluating the different parts, making markers and such, and playing around with the tool a whole lot more. I'm looking forward to figuring this thing out!

i have a pedal set up were one pedal is punch in,the other is stop play. so when a loop is set up i dont even use my hands. when nailing down a piece perfectly i hit pedal 1 to stop /it goes back to the begining of certain section/pedal 1=play or record, play is handy to addtion. i like to get it as close as possible so when its time to comp im not sifting through boatloads of layers looking for the perfect storm, you know?

Ordinarily I'd be in total agreement Karl, but only yesterday, I was trying to nail this damned guitar solo. I'd already looped about 20 times, each time making a mistake but just really attempting to get it all down in one phrase to avoid comp'ing. I actually said out loud to myself - RIGHT! this is the last take, I'm fed up with this. And I got it down perfectly. This is probably a one off though, given the current stat e of my chops
