Little Bluegrass tune

Well, I've been commenting on other people's work here so I figured it was time to show one of mine.

In today's episode of "Squandering my Talent and Resources for my own Amusement", I give you my cover of 1983's "Hey Ho Away We Go" by (very!) British synth-pop band Freur (who went on to become Underworld).

The fun part? My version is bluegrass. Yep, Irish-tinged bluegrass....been wanting my work on my bluegrass chops a bit so figured I try this. Never played bluegrass before...it's kinda fun :) Threw this together in a couple hours...really just for kicks, but it amused me enough to show here.

If you're curious, all vox were recorded through either a U87 or a Blue Bottle Rocket Stage 2 (K7 cap) run through Great River Pre's and through an 1176 before arriving at the ADC. Acoustic guitar was a Taylor 816ce through a pair of Gefell M300's running through a Sebatron tube pre. Other instruments are sample libaries. Minimal effects with UAD Plugs. Tracks were summed in my SSL X-rack and then run through the SSL stereo EQ and SSL bus comp (also in the X-rack). Mild limiting with Ozone on the resultant stereo file.

great stuff Razorwit - I remember the original. Excellent mix - I love the up close and personal vocal.

Loved it. And I agree bluegrass is fun stuff. 

Loved the Irish slant. 

Hope you don't mind, but I downloaded a copy for my Sony mp3 player.

Loved Freur, what a great idea for a cover. This works beautifully, loved it start to finish, just fantastic.

I"m not familiar with the original, but this is just so cool!  mix is tight and spot on!  performances are stellar!  this is just fun!!!

Oh god yes it does. If you happen to know one in the SLC area I'll happily put any number of microphones in front of them :)

Really? Well, Scottytunes ol' pal, if you happened to record a real fiddle part for that little tune, I would absolutely love to replace my lame soft-synth part with an example of your virtuosity and then you'd be famous!


(in this context, "famous" actually means "featured on a song that will likely not be used for any purpose other than private entertainment and for which you'd receive absolutely no financial recompense, but would still be kind of awesome". So, ya know, not the traditional kind of famous)
