You can't you have to rewrite the bassline in the scale you want.

If this is a groove clip you can transpose it via the Track inspector widget for key.

Right on for a transpose; but I think he wants to rewrite the piece in a whole new scale and that would take a human for sure.

    1. Right-click the FX bin of the MIDI track and choose MIDI Plugins > Cakewalk FX > Transpose.

    2. In the FX window, choose Key/Scale for the Transpose Method.

    3. For the From: parameter, set the current scale and type used by the MIDI data in the track.

    4. For the To: parameter, choose the scale you want to transpose to... and also the type of scale.

    That should do it.

Hi Scott,  how can a computer rewrite a scale.  I mean how could it even know how to transpose the note up or down in the new scale to get it to sound right.  When the composer writes the piece in a specific scale to start with.  I would think it would sound terrible.

I'm just asking because I can't see how this plugin could work very well for that.

I do agree it may possibly be able to transfer a piece up or down a certain amount of half steps in the same scale but not in a whole new scale.

If this is what the OP is asking.

    Cheers,

Wave that is the wonder of MIDI. It can change any aspect of the data including scale, key or transpose.

I just can't see how it can do that.

In fact there is no way I would even try that.  There is no easy out.  It would rip the life out of the piece for sure .

Computers can not write music even if it is a midi file it would just sound like garble.

Re:Change scale of midi groove? 2012/05/11 19:40:55 (permalink)
Perhaps we are thinking about very different things. I am saying that MIDI being just data can be easily transposed. Heck, I have done for as long as I can remember.

Lets try to get our terms in agreement.

Scale means to me the same as key. Meaning as in what key its in.  C v Em.

Transpose is to change the key. MIDI is meant to be able to do that with no problems.

Than there is tuning. This can mean a 12 tone (western scale) or a 5 tone (Eastern scale).
    Below is from the manual.

    Adjusting the Key/transposing a track (Key+)
Each MIDI note event has a key number, or pitch. On playback, the key offset (Key+) parameter
transposes all notes in the track by the designated number of half-steps. The value can range from
-127 to +127. A value of 12 indicates that notes will be played back one octave higher than they are
    written.
This parameter does not affect the note number that is stored for each note event. When the clip is
displayed in other views, like the Piano Roll, Staff, or Event List view, you will see the original notes
as they are stored in the file. To permanently change the pitches, you can edit them individually or
use the Process > Transpose command.
If the key offset value transposes the key number (MIDI note) outside the allowable MIDI range (0–
127), the key number will be transposed to the lowest or highest octave within that range.
You can use the Key+ parameter to assist in preparing scores for instruments whose music is written
in something other than “concert” key (such as Bb trumpet). For more information, see “Music
notation for non-concert-key instruments” on page 1039.
When you edit the Key+ parameter, pressing [ or ] changes the value by 12 instead of by 10. This
makes it easy to transpose by octaves.
To set the key offset for a track
    1. Select the track and open the Track Inspector.
    2. In the Track Inspector, click the Key+ control.
    3. Enter a value (1 = a semitone), or press the + or – key to change the key by a single semitone.
Use the [ or ] key to change the key by 12 semitones (one octave).

Ok that explaines it.  I thought scale meaning: Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian etc. etc....
That is the way I was seen it.
Sorry, if I have misunderstood the whole enchilada.

Who knows you may be right in how you understood what was asked. Its a matter of what the OP was really asking.  However, if its a groove clip its unlikely to be in a non western scale.

I got the feeling that at some point we were talking about very different things.
