I don't understand what you mean by "PCI-e firewire"?

PCI-e and Firewire are 2 separate things.

As in a PCI-e card which has firewire outputs for a motherboard that doesn't have firewire as standard? If that's the case, just get a motherboard with firewire... That's not too hard to find.

Sometimes the on-board chipset is not compatible with certain Firewire units. In which case its better to buy a PCIe card (but not a USB/Firewire hybrid).

I use LaCie - they have TI chips which for my Presonus FS 26x26 is the best. Also, I'm using the standard W7 Firewire drivers (not legacy) and have never had any hiccup. Via on-board is however disabled.

I have seen this make available at Hong Kong (which is nearer you than France), so in theory they should have a good distribution set up.

    Cheers,
    Jerry

AH, sorry.  Jerry's post cleared it up. my bad.

I had a hard time with PCI-e/Firewire myself and ended up using a PCI/Firewire card instead.

    MOBO: here http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_2011/P9X79_PRO/#CPUS

    CPU here: http://ark.intel.com/products/63697/Intel-Core-i7-3930K-Processor-(12M-Cache-up-to-3_80-GHz)

There is a version WS version of the MOBO(ASUS P9X79 WS that has onboard TI firewire but still, I'm glad to know that a 3rd party PCIe firewire card is available that will have my back incase the onboard is flaky.

thanks Jim for the 2 recommendations. As alsways not so easy to find in Australia so might have to get it in from US.

No, that's not true.  I bought an SIIG which ended up having a VIA firewire chip on it.  I couldn't tell from the packaging and it had a sticker on top of the chip, I only found out when I got it installed and windows reported it as a VIA chip.

SIIG does cover the chip with a sticker.
If you know what the "smaller" TI chipset looks like, you can tell the difference between it and the (larger) Via chipset.  Look closely...

Jim's information was more accurate as he stated the actual part numbers. that's why I asked as often times 2 different cards from the same manufacturer can use different chipsets, one stable while the other not.

being a DAW builder who's work I've experienced and someone who clearly sees more components pass his test bench than most of the forum members combined I'm inclined to give Jim's opinions a little more credence.

BTW. I've had Via and TI  chipset MOBO's that worked fine as well as some that didn't. I've even had a DELL laptop with a dfreaded RICOH chipset firewire controller that could run 64 samples all day no matter what I threw at it but that's not the general consensus on RICOH chipsets nor a common experience. I count myself just lucky on that occassion.

My current HP laptop's firewire controller runs my FF800 fine while I can't even get my Studio Live to remain stable. With an express card Firewire controller (SIIG) they both run perfect all day.

It's a crap shoot for sure.

check spects before buying of course ....it's a must no matter what brands you go for ...

Also TI chipset is not the only thing !!

I completely agree - and I'm honestly NOT trying to pick on you, but as I said the packaging did not have the chipset listed on the one I bought.  and if the card had worked correctly I would not have cared if it were VIA instead of TI, but it didn't - I had to replace it because it caused popping/stuttering.  the card I replaced it with was a PCI/Firewire with TI chipset and it did not cause problems.

Yeah, that's not to say that other Firewire controllers can't work...
The odds of success are just lower (especially if you're pushing the limits of low-latency performance).
