V-Studio 700 and Midi

Do any of you V-Studio 700 owners use the midi ports that come with V-Studio? If yes, any issues with it? If no, what are you using? I currently have an M-Audio MidiSport 8x8, which I love, because I can use it without the computer being on. I am not certain how much longer M-Audio is going to support it with driver updates. Can the V-Studio still allow midi data to flow without the computer being on?

Ultimately, I am wondering if I can replace the MidiSport...

Right... I suggest you use the Midisport or one Cakewalks-Rolands USB connected Midi interfaces. The ones on the VS700 will not be as fast.

Thanks Craig! I didn't consider the speed. I didn't think that in this day and age midi speed would be an issue to consider. I will do some more research, though.

The MIDISport 8x8 is great.  I've been using mine for over 12 years and it's still working like a champ.  The 8x8 was their flagship MIDI device, so I can't see them ending driver support for it anytime soon.  M-Audio has been great about updating drivers for their legacy products.  I'd give it another few years at least, until (or if) USB 3.0 firmly takes over.

As for the MIDI ports on the VS-700, I haven't used them much, so I can't say for certain.  I did plug a keyboard into it, and it worked fine.  I honestly don't believe speed would be an issue.  But the computer would need to be on, as far as I know.  And with only one in and one out, it can't replace the 8x8.

As long as that little green light on my trusty MIDISport keeps pulsating, it's staying in my rack.  ;)

Thanks Heather! I am tending to agree with you on the 8x8 I really like it, I just noticed the drivers seemingly were taking longer and longer to come out. I have been looking for a while on a device to replace it, but nothing has been able to, in my book. It has been solid! For now, it stays. :)

Although I like the MIDISPORT, I have had a few issues with it, usually related to driver problems.  I have a 4x4 and it is a few years old: perhaps the driver issues are resolved on newer and or 8x8 units.

The issues have always been easily solved, but require me to go in to Preferences and reselect devices from time to time when things get goofed.  Essentially, MIDISPORT shows up suddenly as MIDISPORT1 or some other varianct name.

Do you plug the MIDISport into the same exact USB slot each time?  I know that every time you switch ports, Windows actually reinstalls the driver.  If the previous one was still running, it might errantly create a new instance.  Just a theory.  What version of Windows are you running, btw?

Sometimes simply reinstalling or updating the driver solves the problems.  Start by uninstalling the old driver using the uninstaller.  If you have multiple instances, you might have to start the computer in safe mode to remove them all.  Be sure to disconnect the MIDISport first.  After starting in safe mode, go to device manager and you should see all the extra drivers under "Sound, video and game controllers".  Delete ALL the MIDISport drivers you see there, restart the computer and then reinstall the latest driver available for your operating system.  Then plug in the 4x4 to complete the installation.  I'd recommend NOT plugging into a hub, if you can help it, at least for the initial installation.  Hubs are evil.

Or you could just reselect the devices as you've been doing.  Probably easier.  :)

You should never unplug the USB connection to the VS700. It will cause driver problems. In addition, you should always follow the same turn on sequence. V700R first, V700C second, PC third, keyboard controller fourth. Turn on the keyboard controller you want to be main instrument before you turn on any other peripheral Midi controllers. Then open Sonar and the V700R and V700C should be your established soundcard-interface and Midi controller. Windows has the habit of grabbing the first driver it sees if you do it any other way.
