they're for Session Drummer 3.  there have been 3 versions of session drummer.  the first one was just a GUI for placing MIDI loops into a project and not much more than that.  Session Drummer 2 came out with Sonar 5, I think, and Session Drummer 3 came out with 7 or 8.

the expansion packs are for Session Drummer 3 only.

yes, I use EZD with X1.  did you have a question about it?

Just wondered how it worked or whether they were difficulties with it as I have Sonar X1 (not sure if you knew) and plus I have heard good things about it and how flexible it can be with a DAW application.

    So?????????????????????

    EZdrummer works well with X1.

Superior Drummer (which can play EZDrummer packs) has more "mixer" capabilities than EZDrummer's mixer. However if you're going to create a multiple outs folder for drums and use X1 or 3rd party plugs prolly no need for Superior's added mixer capabilities.

    JMO, YMMV.

yep.  works well.  I have only ever opened Session Drummer 3 just to see what it is and how well it was made, to help others, etc.  I have never used it in a project because I have EZD and Superior and a lot of expansion packs.

EZD is very EASY to use.  I loved using it for many years before superior - but even now I still use it for percussion instead of opening an instance in Superior.

I find the drop zone hits and drums to be better than session drummer (dont shoot me) but I have had more success with it when producing.

can you set EZD to different keys (lets say when you are using MIDI keyboards)???

But saying that I have never used the expansion packs as I think Sonar Studio still uses Session Drummer 2 if I'm right.

in sonar you can set any hit to any key you want using a drum map.  and that's not tied to a softsynth like EZD or any other one.

yes, I think you are correct, the Studio version has Session Drummer 2.

Do you reckon that EZ would be a worthy buy and how often do you use them. I mean I would be using it for R 'n' B styled music covering Jazz to modern to gospel. Wiill EZ cover these Genre's?

I use EZD or Superior in almost every project.  even when I am lucky enough to have a drummer, so far the drummers I've recorded were using MIDI drums and I still output the MIDI to EZD and/or Superior.

the only exceptions to using EZD or Superior were when I couldn't get a drum track together like I wanted and ended up using Band in a Box Real Drum tracks.

    Re:Drummer Packs 2012/05/15 10:41:37 (permalink)
One issue some people run into when triggering drum sounds from a keyboard is the lack of feel.

In the case of Jazz and R&B, the feel of the drum part is more important than the sounds themselves.  In my opinion, you can create some very nice drum tracks using EZD, Battery, or a number of other tools if you are able to give your MIDI track that "real drummer" feel.  If you are unable to get the groove you want from the keyboard, you may want to either utilize a product like Band In A Box or collaborate with a drummer to record your tracks.

If you've already addressed this point elsewhere, forgive me for bringing it up.  Hope that helps.

EZD Drummer sounds good I will find myself at Digital village to have a look and see if I can pick it up.

I also want the proteus pack to give me a different direction to what Cake have although cake pack it in when it comes to there intstruments and synths.

Remember: EZDrummer only comes with a Pop/Rock Kit and a Cocktail kit. You'll need additional packs for the genre you want to cover.

Always best to watch for sales on the packs.

I prefer Superior to BFD, but that's largely a matter of preference.  Superior will give you a huge amount of excellent samples recorded dry so you can process them the way you want them.  There's a bit of a learning curve, but it's not bad.

I know other people who prefer BFD.

Listen to some previews, make sure you know exactly what's included in each module/expansion pack/etc., and enjoy...

BFD2 comes with 10 kits, all recorded totally dry with NO processing.

It also has a large number of presets which have been tweaked in BFD's mixer, adding EQ, Compression, Distortion, Saturation etc.

IMHO, at £99 you cannot go wrong.

And it's now 64 bit (has been for a while)

bj,how much is bfd paying you to push their products/?
    lol

    you are funny man,
well it worked with me anyway,i did get bfd,its a learning curve but i really like it.
so it was good advise from yours truely.

i will say this, addictive drumms is really cool too.as is ez drummer.

as far as the gui and set up though, session drummer is probably the easiest and my favorite.
hey look,it doesnt have the sounds that bfd does,
but you can drop samples right into session drummer..can bfd do that?
    or addictive?
    i know addictive you cant.

and i like to process my drums.
bfd's drums are already really processed(you can make them dry)
but serious,im not just being the fan boi here.
i like session drummer.you can do alot with it.
only thing i dont like is the hi hats.
still havent figured out how to replace the hi hat and get both the open and closed hat

No they're not, they are totally dry unless you choose a mixer preset

What, kit pieces? Well you can easily replace an existing piece with another from BFD's database. Or did you mean Midi tracks? Again, the answer is yes, you just drag & drop from the groove page. If you mean can you drop the wavs that make up a sample set into BFD, then no, but that's missing the entire point of BFD.

with session drummer, all you need to do is drag a kick sample(wave 16 or 24 bit) and drop it right on the picture of the kick drum in session drummers gui(try it)
cant do that in bfd,i just tried.

i can literaly try a sample of 100's of kicks and snares and when try them out as easily as droping them right in the kit

Sure you can do this, but you will only have 1 sample for the entire velocity range. The stock kits with Session Drummer have multi-samples (most do anyway) to create some sort of realism, but as soon as you drag and drop a new sound onto the drum (or cymbal) you are then stuck with just 1 sample no matter how hard that drum is hit!  (yes, the volume goes up and down, but it's the same sound)

BFD, EZ, Superior, Addictive, etc.... go the extra mile to get the most samples they can per drum - to cover the entire velocity range. To me this creates a much more realistic drum environment!

    Just my 2 cents.
