Please be kind

Ok, guys, I really, really need some help here. I have been out of the game since about a year after Sonar 4 Producer was released. Had a bunch of personal things happen had to sell all my stuff because it was more of a hobby at that point...you know the story. Well I have made some connections, met people that know people, they heard a demo and I have an opportunity to write more seriously.
It is not that I am not willing to research to do my own build, but the truth is....I am a lost ball in tall weeds on this. The more I read the more I have no clue about what I am reading. Things have changed since I had my last Sonar machine P4 2.4ghz XP machine built and considerably cheaper so it seems, as I put 2 gigs of Corsair ram in my XP machine and that cost me over $600 at the time...LOL

I was originally looking at a Sweetwater Creation Station 400 for $1,799.00. Well I keep reading all over the place that the same machine can be build for well under a grand. Is this true? I mean I know it comes with two years technical support but the truth is that I have never had problems with my computers in the past and am not sure if that support is worth the extra $1000 I could spend on a quality sample libraries. Further more I don't even know if that system is sufficient for my needs. Here are the specs for the CS400 and then I will list my needs. I really need help picking out the hardware if I am to do this myself because all this Sandybridge, IvyBridge, Yada yada chipset blah blah stuff makes no sense to me whatsoever.

Specification Detail Operating System Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit CPU Sandy Bridge Core i7 Quad 3.4GHz Motherboard Intel DH67-CL Graphics/Video DVI-I, HDMI Maximum Resolution 2560 x 1600 Memory - Included 8GB Memory - Max 32GB Storage - Included 500GB Storage - Expanded 1TB Optical Drive Lightscribe DVD-RW Thunderbolt Ports No Thunderbolt Ports FireWire Ports 2 x FW400 USB Ports 8 x USB 2.0, 2 x USB 3.0 PCI Slots 3 x PCIe, 3 x PCI Card Slots 1 x MultiCard (MMC, MicroDrive, CF, SD, SmartMedia, MemoryStick, MSPro) Video Ports 1 x DVI-I, 1 x HDMI Other Ports/Slots 2 x SATA 6.0 Gb/s, 3 x SATA 3.0 Gb/s, 1 x eSATA Ethernet Yes WiFi No WiFi Bluetooth No Bluetooth Audio Inputs 2 x 1/8" Audio Outputs 3 x 1/8", 1 x S/PDIF Coax Included Display No Display Included Included Keyboard USB Keyboard Included Mouse USB Mouse Height 7" Width 19" Depth 20" Weight 38 lbs.
Obviously I know that I will need more than one hard drive. I am pretty sure that I am going to need more than 8 gigs of Ram. Here is what I would like to be able to do.

Sonar X1D expanded.
Z3TA+2
Cinematic Strings 2
LASS
Cinebrass Pro Bundle
Symphobia
Hollywood Winds
Voxos
Orange Tree Samples Cherry Electric Guitar
Orange Tree Samples Steel Strings
Kontakt 5
and various other small libraries.
Here is a list of outboard hardware I have chosen

RME Babyface Blue
Kawai MP10
Neumann KH120 monitors

I can not tell you in words how much I appreciate any and all help in selecting computer components to build a sufficient system. Also if someone wishes to expound even more...what kind of system "could be built for the same money as the CS400?

Thank you for reading and God bless

You'd do well to drop a PM to one of the specialist DAW builders that frequent this site - Jim @ Studiocat and Scott @ ADK.

For the sort of use you want from your new machine, it looks like a 3 disc system will be best for you - one for the OS & Programs, one for all your Cakewalk projects and one for your sample libraries

Don't forget also to price in a decent audio interface, onboard sound chips just don't cut it.

    CbB, Platinum, 64 bit throughout
    Custom built i7 3930, 32Gb RAM, 2 x 1Tb Internal HDD, 1 x 1TB system SSD (Win 7), 1 x 500Gb system SSD (Win 10), 2 x 1Tb External HDD's, Dual boot Win 7 & Win 10 64 Bit, Saffire Pro 26, ISA One, Adam P11A,

Depending on the amount of polyphony you need from each of those disk-streaming sample libraries, I'd consider the following:

    • Using multiple convential HDs for the sample libraries (each HD ~120-140MB/Sec sustained)
    • Using a pair of drives in RAID-0 (~250MB/Sec sustained)
    • Using SSD (one of the newer SATA-III units - ~500+MB/Sec sustained)

For 128 notes of disk-streaming polyphony, a single conventional HD is fine.
For 256-512 notes of polyphony, RAID-0 is a good solution.
For 1024+ notes of polyphony, you'll want to use one of the latest generation SSD.  ie: You can pull 1500+ simultanteous notes from LASS.
Using SSD, sample libraries will load faster.

A stock machine with 2 conventional HDs is not going to work for a high-polyphony scenario.
You're going to need multiple additional drives (type and quantity based on your polyphony needs).

You want a bare minumum of 16GB of RAM.
If you're loading large templates, I'd want 32GB of RAM.

The short answer is no, you're not going to build a quality machine capable of delivering high-polyphony for under $1000.

a big +1 for what jim said aside from the raiding drives.
with samples bandwidth is not the issue usually but rather access times. raid does not increase this and trying to run all those samples off a raid aray means lots of disk head moving. better to split the libraies over mlitple drives..

    LASS= SSD

also you will wnt to get windows 7 PRO as home only does 16 gig ram and bassed on what you are mentioning 32Gig will be where you land eventually.

i would add further that the newer Sandy E system would be better (a good chunk better) 3930k over clocked to 4.5GHz is ideal for what you are wanting to do..

I wouldn't want a single RAID-0 for all those libraries.
On my personal machines, I like the following config (good balance of cost/space/performance):

    Fast conventional HD - OS/Apps
Fast conventional HD - Audio files
Fast conventional HD - Samples (less demanding libraries)
RAID-0 array - Samples (larger libraries)
SSD - dedicated to high-polyphony sample libraries (one for each of the mega libraries)

    We're pretty much in agreement...
Note what we spec as our base "Film Scoring" DAW

Thank you to everyone who responded. I had a very detailed and pleasant conversation with Jim Roseberry today. Professional, courteous and really knows his stuff. I will be purchasing an Ultra Film Scoring Machine, Kontakt 5, RME babyface Blue and X1d from studiocat!

I also need to be fair about my original post. The rep I am dealing with at Sweetwater is a great guy who has been more than helpful and I plan to make several purchases there as well, it just seems as far as my specific requirements for a computer the offerings are more tailored for me at studiocat. Sweetwater is a great place to buy gear!
