Layla 3g is still a fine interface. If you have the PCI slots, it should be great.

I agree and it's a shame that I wasn't aware of this sooner. I did a lot of research making sure it would work with the system, X1, etc... but I guess I didn't do enough research. Sadly I think I may possibly be taking a step down with the 18i6 but I just gotta get things moving and I can use the 18i6 on my laptop too so that's a bonus. Maybe I'll look into the adapters millzy was talking about and have the best of both worlds. Cheers.

Oh good to know. I was actually thinking of contacting Focusrite support before buying. I'll probably do that after I get this current email off to Cake support.

If you still have any questions about the 18i6 or using it with Sonar,  feel free to contact us here at Focusrite tech support.   You can reach us at 855-243-6287 Monday-Friday from 9am-6pm PST.  Not really sure about the situation with calling from Canada, but you can give it a try.  You can also get in contact with us through our website:

http://www.focusrite.com/answerbase/en/contact.php

Also, have you considered any of the Saffire range interfaces?  They have a dual unit mode that would allow you to expand your setup with a second Saffire interface should you need more I/O down the line.  You had mentioned the desire for expandability, so I thought that might interest you.

Wow. Thanks Matt. I have looked into the Saphire series (kind of) but they are a little more than I can afford just yet and I couldn't see myself needing more than 8 ins for at least a couple years (mostly just me dinking around in my home studio at the moment). I see the 18i6 can have the mic pre options expanded with the Octo box thingy via optical cable so that would really cover any live band recordings I might do (and even without that I can run through my Mackie mixer if need be for the last 6 ins). Down the road when I have more money again I'll be able to look at the top end stuff. Then I can just retire the 18i6 to portable studio duty. But really... for $300 it looks like quite a deal. I appreciate you stopping in. I'll take a look around your site a bit to see if I'm overlooking anything. Cheers.

It certainly seems they take customer service seriously. Speaking of which I just talked to Cake Tech support and they gave me some info and are sending me some links to help hammer down any other issues so thumbs up to Cakewalk as well... and thanks again for your help too, chuckebaby. Your advice helped me understand what exact questions I needed to ask. Looks like I might be back in action soon.

Beepster, it sounds like you're getting your questions answered and your issues sorted. Hopefully you get it figured out and get on with making music.

Thanks to Matt from Focustire for chiming in here, as well. You're always welcome to hang here and lend your knowledge.

@Seth... Yes indeed they have been answered and I have all the info I need to proceed. I can take a bit of a breath now knowing what the problems may be and how to resolve them. Thanks for taking the time to respond. Perhaps if you could recommend some smaller scale Roland keyboard controllers in the budget range I'd like to take a look. I certainly know you guys make keyboards well so that would be worth my investment (same as how I intend on investing in your V-Drum series at some point). Lugging out the DX-7 every time just to noodle around would be... excessive.

That said I really do have a ton of positive things to say about my experience so far as an almost 2 week user of the Production Suite but I'm a little brain fried to write a proper review... but it is all good. This issue was not Cakewalk's fault... it was the cruddy PCI slots on new boards and probably something to do with Microsoft (maybe not but I just like yelling at Microsoft... who doesn't?). Might be good to maybe warn some of us PCI card users beforehand though. It'd probably take your ticket queue down significantly.

And as far as Focusrite... well I have had an 18i6 put aside for me just today because of this and it will be purchased in a couple of weeks. The fact you even showed up here to offer advice even after the issue was resolved... well, I don't think I've ever seen customer support like that. Awesome.

Thanks guys and thanks to forum for pointing me in the right direction. Peace.

@John... I really do have an epic first timers review to report but as I said I'm just a little too wonked to type it all up. Maybe tomorrow. You, sir, however have been epic in pointing me in the right direction immediately from the beginning.... like literally my first night here. I have learned massive amounts about topics I was completely unaware of only a week ago from your advice and a few other awesome guys here. I certainly won't forget the help and good on you for being a genuine and awesome human being. Cheers!

And there's another helpful fellow... You've been awesome, chuckebaby and many thanks to you. I think tomorrow I'm gonna wail through the system config stuff the CW tech guys sent and see if I can start hammering through the tuts again. I'll probably just crank the buffer rate to avoid any more dropout disruptions and if that fails I'll resort to switching to the onboard sound like you suggested (and was also recommended by the CW tech) until I get the new i/o box up and running. Definitely anxious to lay some tracks and as I picked away at my little guitbox tonight... the juices started flowing. My fingers seem to know it's time to shine. Cheers!
